so gorgeous

I saw Stalker last Saturday, too, but I don't think it was a restoration. Kind of strange since usually theatrical rights get locked down.

From the Janus Stalker trailer, it looks like the sepia parts of the movie are a lot brighter, is that true? Like the part where they follow the train into the zone looks like it happens at a different time of day now.

Lots of great-sounding extras on that, worth it for fixing the aspect ratio alone though

Barry Lyndon looks pretty stacked but it doesn't look like FWWM will have much added.

What? I love a good directors cut as much as the next guy, but Lynch cut the "missing pieces" from the film, and not under any pressure. If there was a new cut it'd be a revisiting, which, I trust that he'd do a good new cut but obviously it's wholly up to him whether he thinks it needs it and it doesn't seem that he does. I love having he missing pieces footage as a supplement and don't understand why people feel it needs to be integrated.

I don't understand why you're all complaining about a bare bones Blu-Ray of FWWM, when that's the entire point of Twin Peaks, these characters baring their bones to cosmic forces of good and evil, and waiting for the forces to judge their bones in return.

Le Pont du Nord is very good and a bit more accessible than either of the films you mentioned.

I think this would be the thread for the 4K talk.

ah OK then. Who has taken the plunge with 4K Tv/player/UHD blu rays? What are your thoughts on quality uptick?

The Criterion, Arrow, and Kino Lorber sales all happening simultaneously means I've broken my personal monthly spending record.

And I'm quietly beginning to think about placing another Kino order. Because 15 discs wasn't enough  :ryan:

love/hate this time of year. I try to keep it to no more than 3 or 4 during the Criterion sale. Went with Hara Kiri, Branded to Kill, and Marketa Lazarova this time out. Gonna stop there.

Same. Picked up stalker, before trilogy, blow-up, being there, ghost world and straw dogs. I am making sure not to go anywhere near B&N until the sale ends

I got a Sony 4K set a couple years ago, but only because I was already buying a new TV anyway and figured some future-proofing would be wise. But as it turns out, it doesn't support HDR which is a way bigger deal in perceived image quality than the bump up to 4K resolution (which requires either a really large screen size or a super small viewing distance to be particularly noticeable).

It's also been a real pain in the ass getting 4K material to view on the TV. The built-in YouTube app doesn't support 4K playback, for instance, even though you would think that would be a no-brainer software update. For a long time the only 4K content I could watch was what Netflix and Amazon offered, and many of Amazon's 4K movies are overpriced, and Netflix charges a few more bucks per month for not that many titles.

Just last week I got my first-ever 4K UHD blu-ray, Malick's Song to Song, which comes in a dual-format package with the regular blu-ray. But I don't have a 4K-capable player yet, so the 4K version will have to wait.

I did end up buying the newest generation Chromecast which supports 4K YouTube playback as well as whatever other 4K files you might have. It has an ethernet connector so if you're on a gigabit network, you can watch 4K files back that way. And my Seiki region-free blu-ray player has really nice looking 4K upconversion built in, which does look noticeably better than regular 1080p playback.

But overall it's been a pretty slow rollout and it still seems like we're a little ways off from more 4K content being readily available.

Yeah i took the plunge a few months ago with an xbox one s and and a Samsung 70" 4K with HDR. Ive been buying new movies when they come out and some old (pacific rim looks amazing). Most of them look and def sound better with atmos but many old titles are from a 2k source. Its def early but it seems like it will be the future based on how hard the studios are pushing it. The Revenant looks and sounds insane too. HDR really improves blacks and color on many titles

Anybody interested in buying some barely used Criterions? I overspent on my gf's birthday present this month so I need to come up with some extra scratch.
