He has breakfest with cyril and his girl before alma. Shes upset about being ignored and woodcock gets annoyed. He has cyril send the girl away after and then he goes to the diner and meets alma

There a bunch of choreographed stuff that serves as an introduction to the house/setting

in some ways this is like the opposite of inherent vice but will probably be just as polarizing

some shots/scenes that stuck with me:

-pretty much every driving scene shot from the front looked incredible, whoa paul!
-a couple great shots of reynolds with bright light splashing on his face, when he first meets her at breakfast and then when he's looking up at her during the "surprise"
-the mother standing next to the door
-the whole NYE scene was incredible, particularly greenwood's score clashing with auld lang syne
-the tension and release in that end dinner scene was so beautiful...
-...along with the rest of the score, holy shit. jonny's best yet i'd say.

this + the master are probably more similar mood-wise and stylistically than any other two PTA flicks except maybe boogie nights + magnolia

Yeah the more I sit with it, the more sure I am that it will be considered a legitimate masterpiece in american filmmaking. not perhaps in some big, important kind of way, but simply a very, very, very good movie.

I guess I didn't realize it was literally only showing in 70mm in new york from the 25th-28th. they're still showing it at union square in standard, but i might as well just wait until the 12th to go see it again when alamo drafthouse gets their week with it.
Nice day if it doesn't rain.

lincoln square gave out lookbooks with stills and concept art that were labeled expressly for the 70 mm presentation

yeah i managed to grab two copies of that lookbook.

i just thought that lincoln square (and the two la theaters i guess) were going to run the 70mm presentation until january 12th and it would just switch to brooklyn, sf, chicago, and austin for the other 70mm presentations, rather than having a two week gap.

the way that the low-key "twist" in that final dinner scene puts their relationship (i.e. the whole movie before it) in a whole new light was magical and unlike anything i've ever seen before, especially in a movie like that. like the whole movie was building up this tension and you didn't know if either of them were gonna blow a gasket and do something horrible and instead it builds up to this moment of romantic bliss built on the same elements that you thought were going to result in something awful.Toggle Spoiler

and fuck, how did i miss this booklet thing?!

they had them spread out on a table right outside the theater. when i saw it on the 26th at lincoln square at the 4:30pm showing, they ran out and a couple employees had to go downstairs and bring up another box of them, so if you saw it after that they may have run out completely. i do have two copies of it because i was like whoa maybe these will be valuable one day, but i don't actually care, so if you ever want one

this was really well executed, with a lush ambiance and fleshed out characters and arcs. I found it gorgeous, but can't say I was moved. it was completely devoid of risk, which is disappointing for a PTA film. didn't grab a booklet because it was a congested fire hazard entering/exiting the theater.
