this may be stupid question, but was the cruise character in magnolia assumed to be a twisted/dramatized reflection of PTA at the time? he was talking about how naked and personal some of it was on the simmons podcast and that let me to rethink some aspects of the movie

i could be pulling that out of my ass

i think it was the stuff about cruise's character and his father that was naked and personal to PTA. not the PUA tony robbins stuff.

can't get this movie out of my head. i'm so happy that PTA turned away from his usual father/son dynamic territory and started digging harder into the motherhood side of family/relationship dynamic. it was such a perfect film, just perversely built up moment to moment, shot to shot...goddamnit and the shots...

just a heads up for anyone in new york, they're showing this in 70mm again this week at lincoln square. it might end up being easier to see it there than at alamo drafthouse this weekend/next week.
Nice day if it doesn't rain.

It's 2018 and studios are still doing 3 week rollouts of PT Anderson movies

I don’t like the reading of the resolution being a joke or any kind of resigning, from either party. It’s a movie about power and vulnerability, desire and need, and it’s a very deft handling of how sensitive and frightening those things are, and the absolute glory of submission - to your needs, to someone else.

Like part of the very purpose of the movie is to complicate the notion of a “traditional dom/sub relationship.”

Yeah reducing the film to a set up/punchline thing misses the mark

I went to see this at lincoln square last friday but it was a super late showing and I was sooo tired and I knew it was a bad idea going in and to my great unending sadness, I accidentally fell asleep the entire movie

so my phantom thread review is on hold....I might catch an earlier showing this week hopefully..

I like this. I thought it did a really good job managing the confusion of interactions & want instead of just creating a dynamic of just control vs freedom.

the strangeness embedded in this movie was so well hidden in the marketing, it was a revelation to watch it unfold in the theater.
Every scene of Reynolds staring at Alma silently deconstructing her eating habits, were complete knee-slappers.
Best movie I've seen in years. Damn

I wanna gather my thoughts about this but I'm having a hard time doing so. I need to see it again, it really knocked me off my feet despite my extremely high expectations.
