long overdue in making this.
i love this dude. i remembered him vaguely from growing up on the prairies and seeing some of his projects at sled island in calgary (which is funny cuz at the time he must've been like 14/15(?)).
i love the new record, as well as a lot of the older stuff. the new one, in particular, is unlike anything i've heard in like the last few years at least. it's like this joni/gospel/ambient collision that i had never considered as being possible.
let's keep track of him in here.

excited to maybe try and see him locally soon
a recent promo video for a show had him playing piano in it
his setup seems to change all the time, which is really cool

it's almost hard to fathom that he's only like 21 years old it's frankly astonishing how fully formed & ambitious he is

it is astonishing that dude's 21 years old. GWCTY is probably the freshest/most novel Canadian release of this decade imo.
(i saw him at a Thundercat show early this year and almost said "hey" but then decided against it.)

i <3 u JSA

i also saw him shortly after the GWCTY release in a small venue.
it was a totally sick, Joni-worshipping 3-piece setup.
JSA on Ovation acoustic, another guy playing lead riffs on a Tele (same guy from the Pop Shots vid in the OP), and bass (the same guy from the promo vid above). insane.
then i went to see him when my sis was in town last fall, and it was an electric guit/bass/drums power trio kind of setup. also insane, but very different.

that rules. when i think of his recordings (non-ff) the whole nature of his live identity becomes kind of puzzling to me because of how layered & specifically idiosyncratic they are, i mean his live sets must be highly improvisatory/experimental right

^that's right. in my experience, there's never a sense of seeing the same show/even the same configuration of players twice, which is part of what makes the church show on Friday with the strings/choir so intriguing.

Yeah, noticed that. Spotify stuck him in a playlist for me this week.

Does this guy have some connection to Women the band?

i think just in terms of them being kind of like mentors to him in the Calgary scene when he was starting to make music in his teens. that was my impression of the connection anyway. also, now GWCTY is getting reissued on Flemish Eye, which the Women records came out on in Canada.
