but like, phil will play bass well and there will be grateful dead songs you can drink whiskey and smoke to and it'll be outside in the summer so if you have $70 to drop, why not?

I bought the Egypt boxset a few years back when it came out. 3CD's a DVD with a bunch of "home movies" and a book with interviews from the band then and now..... The best story is Bobby's description of the bats going crazy and flying around the stage when they started playing. Musically it's not one of their best releases but as far as history and content it's amazing. I could watch the vid of Jerry on a camel on an endless loop.

everything i read the other day said that there was just too many logistic issues and pressure for the shows to turn out well, plus mickey broke his arm, plus jerry had just admitted he had an opiate addiction. they cancelled a bunch of europe shows after the trip.

i think the band really just wanted to go to egypt and made it happen. it was 1978, so even a "bad" dead show was pretty good.

i watched the dvd of this a few weeks ago, it's pretty good! jerry has awesome pigtails, they bring some egyptians onstage, and bill walton is watching from offstage in a little robe.

the additional footage is fun/funny, you get to see them at ruins and on a boat and so forth. but a little heartbreaking because their kids are with them.

for the longest time i thought "prison, babe" in friend of the devil was "Prison Babe," anne marie's rival for the affection of the singer

I always thought the egypt shows were maligned because the recordings, until recently, weren't very good
I remember listening to one of them in the 90s and feeling like there was a great show in there but it was just too boomy
and I've never been too fond of the 78 shows. part of it is most sound like inferior versions of 77
77 just had so many great ones. not just that magic first week of may, but also the february 'swing' show, the may show at the fox theater in atlanta that has a KILLER samson and half-step and the october show in portland where the casey jones opener just rocks
favorite show ever is probably 5/7/77 boston garden, though 5/2/70 and 2/28/69 are in the conversation
I come like a thousand doves

there's also this tomorrow night

On the evening of August 3rd, Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir will pay homage to his late bandmate, Jerry Garcia, who would have turned 70 this week, with a free webcast of a one-time-only assemblage of musicians. The tribute, entitled "Move Me Brightly," will feature Phish's Mike Gordon, Vampire Weekend's Chris Tomson, Grateful Dead vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux, Furthur's Joe Russo and Jeff Chimenti, Ryan Adams and the Cardinals' Neal Casal, the Hold Steady's Craig Finn and Tad Kubler and the Yellowbirds' Sam Cohen and Josh Kaufman, as well as Jim Lauderdale, Cass McCombs, Jonathan Wilson and Harper Simon. Actor Luke Wilson will host. The show will be webcast live at TRIStudios.com beginning at 6:30 p.m. PT.

listening to the spotify sampler of the new 1990 Spring Box Set and the production on this is amazing. There's a much more rich, deep tone on this then most releases from that era. Gonna definitely be looking this up on EBay in 6-9 months if they don't release the whole thing on Spotify.
