this article does a better job expressing the case for some (minimal) optimism about democrats' chances in wv: https://newrepublic.com/article/148363/west-virginia-republicans-trouble

Do you think this would still be true if there had been only two GOP candidates?

Manchin’s 2012 primary opponent also got 40k votes. He had 160k.

The GOP primary had one candidate who got 60k.

i don't know! the fact is that manchin's total is down about 50k from 2012, while his challenger improved by about 10k. that may be only a small improvement, but it's still impressive (to me!) considering she ran on an explicitly environmentalist platform against the most popular and recognizable politician in the state

universe really showing Swearengin what's what in this thread. Take that! Looking forward to the next round of posts like these when Tom Carper beats Kerri Evelyn Harris in September.

aren’t the results of recent elections sort of not showing a slide back toward even on the generic ballot?

What’s the problem here? I didn’t say anything about Swearengin, I questioned the logic that comparing the vote count of the loser of a two person race to the winner in a separate five person race was meaningful.

Yeah, I now realize they are talking about all races, not just the Senate/Governor races.

the DCCC just endorsed someone in CA-48 primary, basically, but they chose a different person than the CA Democratic Party did, because of course they did

Disgraced former Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-TX) has landed on his feet after resigning his office in early April—and he has no intention to pay back the $84,000 of taxpayer money he used to settle his sexual harassment case, according to a Tuesday ABC report.

Though Farenthold’s new gig with the Calhoun Port Authority pays a reported six-figure salary, he has no plans to use that income to reimburse his constituents. “I will say this on the record: I have been advised by my attorneys not to repay that,” Farenthold told ABC. “That’s why it hasn’t been repaid.”
