from the other thread:

tbh i'm kind of foreseeing a shitshow when this drops with people wanting something warm like the original series being incredibly disappointed.

this is what my friend and i were touching on tonight - he's worried it will be tonally "off the mark" (he didn't like IE, i loved it). we both think it will probably have some of its more out-there moments in the premiere, and so right off the bat you're going to get some instant complaining from segments of TP's fanbase that didn't necessarily adore all of lynch's work afterward (or maybe even prior). probably?

Oh wow this hasn't aired yet? I honestly assumed that it had just come and gone and ended up being so bad that nobody cared.

like even if this came and went and was awful, how do you think it's possible that no one is invested enough to care that it was awful? it's twin peaks. you ever been to world of blue? those people are fucking insane.

i think we'll see less of this than anticipated

a lot of the kickback was because they thought frost was taking liberties.

i reckon they/we will forgive lynch almost anything, especially given the numerous big hints that not everything is as it seems in terms of the canon

I guess "nobody cared" is just my exaggerated way of saying that this could have come and gone and been a big deal yet remained completely off my radar.

And no I have never been to or heard of world of blue but I'm guessing nobody cares about it either?

This is exactly what happened with FWWM - fans hated it cause it went to far astray, critics hated it for whatever fucked up reasons they came up with . It got booed at Cannes and was deemed a failure - only in the last 7 or so years has it been reassessed. I think a similar thing will happen with this, only I have faith there will be an appreciable audience that does really love the approach that Lynch takes. I do think, though, that people claiming they hated Inland Empire are in for a disappointment - not that it will resemble that film; but if you think Lynch is going to make another Wild at Heart, or a rehash of the melodrama of season 1, you just haven't done your homework and are hoping for something that based on all available evidence, seems to be something Lynch has no interest in making.

I think the worst thing we can do is squabble in absolutist terms about whether or not this or that is complete rubbish and recognize that everything Lynch has touched, thus far, has been at least mildly interesting from an artistic standpoint and that most of his films, even the "failures" like Dune are incredibly rich in ways that most things are not and that there is little chance, again, based on evidence (as well as hope) that this won't be at least interesting.
