Dahmer/Bundy/Gacy are more disturbing than Rader imo

I didn’t care much for ep 1 but I liked ep 2 a lot and it continued to grow on me and now after the climax of ep 4 was finding out that they received a couple of federal grants I think I love this show

It’s kind of weird that 3 and 4 felt more Fincher-y than 1 and 2

with the main guy, i feel they were trying to recapture a lot of the qualities that made jake gyllenhaal's character work well, but they kind of missed the mark. in zodiac, the gyllenhaal character was obsessive in this sort of young, earnest way that made him more interesting than your typical brooding investigator type of character. i feel like this mindhunter detective guy is supposed to function similarly, but it just falls flat instead. the dude just has no personality whatsoever and is not very interesting to watch. the best stuff about the show is everything about him: the killers, his partner, the academic consultant, etc

Came in to say most of this. Holden really is the worst protag

After finishing the season I really don't think you're supposed to like him. He's a reckelss gender-swapped ingenue who believes himself a genius on a righteous mission. He's just awkward, frustrated, white male hubris personified.

I mean he is also actually something of a genius so that sort of makes his slobbering over a book deal all the more cringe-inducing. We expect the True Ass Detective archetype to be noble and selfless, and Holden is definitely not that.

the writing on this was creaky -- too freudian and too pat (THE MAN WHO DIVINES THE MOTIVES OF OTHERS CANNOT ARTICULATE HIS OWN) -- and I thought that, consequently, some parts like the series openerToggle Spoiler and the hospital confrontationToggle Spoiler felt overly staged. mamma mia, the acting in this was phenomenal, though.

Stakeout mentioned it once to me, then again, on a Thursday night. On that Sunday morning, I watched the last episode. I need a new season now.

I am getting the book, just reading Douglas talk about several cases at once relating to a specific case blows my mind.

There are cases that may disturb us more than Rader, but he was at it for so long, then had his supposed quiet period before he was caught. Just showing glimpses of his case could go on for seasons, that's probably the reason they chose him.

Also in retrospect the dude cartoonishly exploding his own head with a shotgun in the first five minutes is one of the weirdest tonal non sequiturs I've ever seen

Gf and I ran thru all of this in three days and yeah I have to agree I fuckin hate the main dude and his gf, the partner is alright, the professor wears a variation of the same patterned shirt in every scene which was really distracting once we noticed it

For the most part all of the killers are super interesting, Kemper above all. Curious where they go with Rader

I like when they get into the interrogation and interview scenes, the writing is strongest there.

Are all the cases here based on true stories? I know all the killers are but what about the principal and the Georgia/Pennsylvania cases?

This show is basically Criminal Minds rendered as a period piece so it feels More Serious but I liked that dumb show so I like this too

I finished this up today. I really enjoyed it, didn't mind Holden, really liked Bill Tench. It's interesting how there's not really an overall story beyond "dude and his team trying to build a psychological profile for serial killers." It's episodic with the various crimes they help out with, but during the finale I kept wondering what they were going to wrap up. There wasn't really a story to close.

Obv that's totally fine, especially if we're getting multiple seasons. I just hope it doesn't take 2 years for season 2 to get out.
