Frances mcdormand: "Cock ass my daughter Shitheap"
Me, liquid emerging from every hole: "This is one dark f*ing comedy!"

I saw this last night and loved it, thought it was really great. maybe one scene i didn't like (mainly for petty reasons) Sam Rockwell was fucking incredible, and Frances McDormand was as well of course.

this was really entertaining and had solid performances all around. I didn't like how it used black people as props and it sends a pretty mixed message w/ regard to police brutality and the role of law enforcement in general. it had some anachronistic moments that didn't seem intentional, though I could be wrong. overall it left me feeling conflicted but I sure did laugh a lot.

Some real good scenes, not a real good movie. None of the characters really spent that much time around each other, so it just felt like they were wandering around finding stuff to do until the credits rolled.

I still really believe that sam rockwell was good, but i hate his arc now. when i saw it i was uncomfortable with how it might have been interpreted it, but now realizing that what i didn't want to happen completely happened, i have almost completely soured on this movie.

Hoo boy did I hate this movie. Sam Rockwell's performance (not the writing of his character) and Peter Dinlage's hair notwithstanding.

It straddled a good line between tough talkin' roughniks and their problems for about 30 mins, but once it introduced the CGI dear in a field it started doing this ridiculous pendulum between vindictive assholery and bathos, as if one excused the other.

Frances McDormand was pretty much a more severe version of Harry Callahan in her moral certitude. The whole movie was like an Eastwood-esque libertarian dreamworld. Do, say, demean, bludgeon whatever or whoever you want, we all got heart so iz alright. Can't deal with it? Fuck off yah retard!

Peter Dinklage is a dwarf AND he has a crush on Frances McDormand. It's funny because of his inherent dwarfism (sorry, 'midget' per the town parlance) and also because Frances McDormand is severe and always wears a jumpsuit and is therefore presumably sexless. This is the kind of role Dinklage had to play early on in his career. The kind of movie "The Station Agent" subtlety critiqued 15 years ago.

John Hawkes dates a 19 year old. She's very stupid, but we love her anyway.

Frances McDormand's boss is black, and Frances McDormand likes her, so this nicely balances out all referenced racial violence in the town. Her boss is also absolutely forgiving when Frances' bloody minded hi-jinks result in police harassment and false imprisonment. See also: Lester Freeman coming to town to straighten things out.

Wood Harrelson is Christ-like in his forbearance and equanimity. All are his children. He also writes beautiful suicide notes to everyone in townToggle Spoiler

I've no problem with characters mercilessly making fun of one another, but this fell into an early 00's "Drawn Together" level of bad taste "equal opportunity offending" And despite the bad taste, its moral compass was fucked.

Sam Rockwell and Frances teaming up to hunt and murder the would-be rapist? In a movie that goes to ridiculous lengths to show every person as redeemable, throwing an 80's esque boogeyman into the midst undercut its own theme. Unless the theme is if you're a repellent violent creep, all you have to do is murder someone more repellent and violent in order to expatiate. There was some hesitation expressed, but that kind of nonchalant vigilantism is maddeningToggle Spoiler

It evolved throughout the movie. At various points she was from Mississippi, Australia and the UK. This character's vapid one-dimensionality kinda bothered me. Same with all the black characters' in a movie where police violence is such a large plot point.

Might be the emotional state I'm in right now but I still fucking loved it and cried like a baby at times, though.

damn, i can't think of a more damning critique than comparing something to "Drawn Together". A show that made Family Guy look like The Adventures of Prince Achmed

i saw this last night, and while i'll admit i liked francis mcdormand and there were some entertaining moments here and there, i thought it was mostly a mess. the movie's politics were muddled at best and (more likely) offensively bad at worst. it tackled issues like police brutality and domestic violence without ever giving them the gravity they deserve, and sam rockwell's entire character arc was like the film equivalent of that nyt nazi profile. the whole thing just felt like an excuse for characters to hurl racial slurs and make midget jokes.

i've been arguing with my friend (who loved the movie) about this since we saw it last night and i don't think we're ever gonna see eye to eye on this.

I do seem to recall Peter Dinklage making a big deal about the only roles available to him being props for midget jokes but he sure didn't really lean away from it by taking this one.
