Dated, and I could quibble with some of the details, but on the whole it's pretty accurate and a good eye-opener for anyone who thought diamonds had any intrinsic value (clue: they don't, and they are a completely terrible investment). I didn't know the part about the origins of eternity rings, so that was neat.

I liked the gay camp and car dealership articles too, will read the others later this week. Good thread.

Yeah, DeBeers has only 40% or something of the market now so it's not quite as of a monopoly; but they're still in a strong running for Worst People In The World.

Lots of good stuff in that link I posted.
This one is great. It's about a guy who worked for the British government as a double agent in the IRA: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/print/2006/04/double-blind/4710/
I enjoyed this Petraeus profile: http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2010/05/petraeus-201005?printable=true

Todd Marinovich: The Man Who Never Was

Twenty years ago, he was guaranteed to be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game of football. Engineered to be. He was drafted ahead of Brett Favre. Today he's a recovering junkie. Scenes from the chaotic life of a boy never designed to be a man in the 2010 National Magazine Award winner for profile writing.
