really applying any kind of political morality to this is kind of foolish to a degree because the complicity of the players/orgs themselves is pretty hard to determine in many cases so I just try not to be an asshole and use those initial guidelines by and large with huge exceptions made for entertainment and the players I like best

for example france in '06 really confounded my developing rooting system but I fell in with them because I already really loved zidane and he was so fucking good in the knockout rounds

For the overwhelming majority of teams (let's say anyone who doesn't make it to QFs) it's just unremarkable, unless you're a middling team and you manage to squeeze a draw against Italy or something.

It sure doesn't seem like it's "unremarkable" to people in Egypt or Panama or Iceland these past few days and I highly doubt they'll feel differently come next summer no matter what the results end up being.

Panama, Egypt, and Iceland are the kind of middling teams that I specifically said the WC isn't unremarkable for. Glad we agree.

i agree but the russian fa are notorious scum and their players are arrogant douches, not to mention the fact the world cup even being in russia is down to extremely suspicious and corrupt factors.

i still remember this article, the russian players did this after they lost at the euros last year https://deadspin.com/russian-players-punished-for-allegedly-spending-250k-o-1783146933

I will always root for the USMNT but once they get knocked out I cheer Germany. Their 06 team was amazing (Neuville, Ballack, Lahm, Schweini, Podolski, Klose, Jansen, Friedrich) loved all those guys. This WC, Iceland will be my “US” team and I’ll cheer for Germany once they are eliminated.

I don't have the stats to hand but I'd be very surprised if Martial isn't the most effective player (on goals/assists per minutes played basis) in the league this season

picking Can over Matic is literally insane

martial was absolutely garbage all last season, hes 3 goals and 2 assists in 6 apps so far this season with a rating of 7.08

salah has 6 apps 4 goals and 1 assist, rating of 7.15 from whoscored so yea id chose him over martial

subs do better than starters on average in the minutes afforded, presumably because they're fresh against tired players, but Martial destroys Salah, yeah. his sot/conversion are inflated, but in general he just gets the ball more, retains it better, takes it past other players more effectively, and has more overall goal threat. he creates chances almost four times as often.

salah does some stuff on the defensive end that martial doesn't, though, but it's hard to isolate that from the differing roles they're in

can/matic is hard to gauge because the former is much more of an all-action guy, but matic is, again, just way more responsible with possession—and better at getting it back.

salah 8 chances created 4 goals 1 assists

Highest xG/90 and xA/90 for players with > 100 minutes in the league this season. Sure, there will be some regression to the mean over time. But he's better than Niasse, even.
