I'm used to seeing people complain about the D.C. Metro but this is getting out of hand.

MBTA rules.

the subway has been shit for years but after sandy when the mta had to actually acknowledge the work that was needed people got actively pissed and so each incident is noted more than previously and people are realizing how fucking awfully the subway has been funded and kept up. and then today i guess an a train derailed. i'm thinking this is the big event that makes things actually happen (except they can't because you can't just suddenly, immediately fix aging and neglected infrastructure). pumped for a fare hike sometime soon.

It gets incrementally worse every year and it's finally bad enough that people are really starting to notice and bitch about it.

Cuomo is building a new LaGuardia instead of fighting for needed Subway repair funds. Governance of the MTA is too diffuse, fixing what needs to be fixed will be crazy slow and crazy expensive, and no politician will get credit for it because they won't be in office by the time the work is done. But the amount of $ in productivity lost by the most productive economic engine in the US due to subway delays is astounding and needs to be addressed.

Also, riders need to accept that certain lines need to be permanently shut down for years at a time (ala L train's coming closure) in order to make the needed upgrades. If we try to make them while operating the lines on half schedule it will take even longer and cost even more.

over the weekend my uncle was speculating that Trump is using the MTA's shoddy infrastructure as a cover to torture a very liberal city via hellish commutes

I'm not usually into conspiracy theories, but I can get down with that

Something needs to be done, clearly, though I am somewhat pleased that NYC can't act like their subways are so much hipper and cooler than everybody else's.

The only thing that ever made our subways cooler than any other cities was the fact that we operate all of them 24/7. City that never sleeps baby. Hopefully they don't change that because even though I never take the subway later than 9pm the symbolism of it rules.

ours still covers so much territory, serves so many people; runs 24/7

but yeah, we can't claim it's not a pain in the ass, and probably never should have

the 7 train was a nightmare until 2007, was fine for a few years, and is now a nightmare again

we've certainly never had so many lines over capacity/failing at once. most of my family is 50+, lived here their wholes live, and ride the subway daily and they all think it's never been remotely so bad. and I agree with them

yeah it's cool that the subway runs 24/7 and that it's $2.75 to ride so, so many places all over the city and those are also the only good things about the subway at this point

$2.75/ride is a fucking disgrace

more troubling is that the last decade has seen the 30-day unlimited nearly double in price

It's pretty gross you have to pay 2.75 to stand on a sweltering platform and no one can tell you why the train hasn't shown up for 25 minutes at 2 in the afternoon.

$2.75 is some bullshit but at least it's not some insane zonal shit like the tube where your ride is like forty pounds per stop

adjust your entitlement and it's fine.

it's the only thing left in this city that counterpunches ruthless ambition.

it's basically serenity prayer: the ride.

I'm not the smartest or most directionally competent person in the world but fuck the NYC subway system.

Went to NYC for a visit a couple of months ago, took the subway from the Bronx to Manhattan for a transfer to Queens. Made it to Manhattan just fine, got on the next train that was clearly marked as what I wanted. Got on, it went in the right direction for two stops, then inexplicably was held up for like 15, 20 minutes and then started going in the opposite direction.

So I said "fuck this", went topside and just paid for a damn Lyft to the record stores I was going to.

Made me feel like a real dumbass but then my gf's sister, who we were visiting, said "Oh, that just happens sometimes."

O_o

This has never happened to me on any subway system in any other city.
