some of the soft moon stuff is close to what i'm going for, but then i don't want to do that same photocopy texture he does cause i feel like it'd be too similar

Grab a texture you think works and then fuck with blend modes and opacity until you find something that looks good?

there's not a right answer, just try stuff until you get to something you like

you guys are both right. you could re-create that soft moon look with different blend modes and opacities, but you'd just be copying until you get comfortable enough to start doing your own thing. you could try making it by hand i guess. like get some masking tape, yellow paint, and mix up 3 or 4 shades of grey, and pull up some el lissitzky for inspiration and see what you can do. maybe even scan in a couple and layer them (multiply and overlay modes usually look good).

If I export a map as pdf (or whatever format) without labels, would I be better off adding text/labels in PS or AI?

having used both, i find it easier to align text with AI but you can do either. wherever you're more comfortable, neither should have trouble with the format.
i don't do this for a living so w/r/t workflow i can't really comment

Hopefully this is a really simple question for you all;
I've used Photoshop on PC for a long time for simple edits (resize, touchups, etc), but I recently got a mac. I've installed GIMP as I read it's a free alternative to photoshop, with many of the same functions.

I'm having trouble resizing & exporting .jpgs without having them distort a massive amount - tons of pixelation. Is this a mac thing, or what am I missing here?

Thanks!

I've never used Gimp but it sounds like it could be down to some really bad compression settings on the program.

with script fonts, it really depends on how you want the mark to feel and on the individual letters in the logo. But here are a few that I like:

A&S Black Swan
Alina
Belinda
Calgary Script
Linotype Gneisenauette
Liza Text
Reklame Script

and especially the entire Sign Painter family from House Industries

thank you, those are great.

she wants a super feminine zapfino-looking design, so everything she finds on Creative Market ends up looking like a wine label or invitation to your aunts second wedding.

Thirst Rough became so ubiquitous that I used to play a game with my at-the-time boss, texting him examples of it IRL and asking him if he was thirsty

Even Taco Bell was using it at one point

Oh god, I showed her Thirsty a while back and a month later caught her trying to use it for entire blocks of copy :?

To be clear this isn't really a client, it's a friend's wife who does glamour photography. I've done some print ads for her in the past, but she just asked me to redesign her "logo".
