watched the first 5...it's not for everyone. deadpan british humor about 2 mentally unstable teens running away. it's a bit better than i expected though and it's a low-level commitment: 8 episodes and each is about 20 min.

Steve James' The Interrupters and Lance Hammer's Ballast are now streaming on Amazon. Both heavy but great films.

I think I need to get the comic now

I thought I detected coxon in the first ep, pretty cool to find out he's done all the music :)

Coxon could relate to the show's suburban south of England setting, with something of an "Essex noir vibe" according to Entwistle. "It felt familiar from when I was young," Coxon says, realising it was a world he could step into and capture. "I'm kind of used to those sorts of places, growing up in a town just outside of Colchester. There's a lot of industrial estates, there's always diners there, complicated roundabouts, expanses of weird grass that you don't really know what's underneath." This created a rich palate for Coxon, who wrote countless songs and instrumentals (rather than traditionally scoring to picture) for the show, covering blasts of garage punk, acoustic meditations, delta blues and an overall tone that feels like Ry Cooder's score to Paris, Texas transplanted into the British landscape as a couple of young oddballs watch their world collapse and crumble.

these choices are a huge part of why it worked so well:

"Entwistle imbues The End of the F***ing World with an ambiguously retro vibe, and one that’s geographically indistinct. The series is set in England, in an unspecified town outside London, but the film has a notably American aesthetic, which the script winks at (“If this were a film,” Alyssa says at one point, “we’d probably be American”). On their journey, James and Alyssa drive through wooded landscapes and vast open roads, emulating classic heist films like Natural Born Killers. They break into a house that’s a masterpiece in mid-century modern design, in the middle of nowhere. When they decide to change their appearances, Alyssa raids a thrift store and finds a baby-doll dress for herself and a Hawaiian shirt for James, adding to the offbeat visual overtones, and both teenagers have smashed their cellphones, which amps up the analog feel of the show. The accompanying music, which includes original songs written by Blur’s Graham Coxon, adds emotional texture and a kind of wistfulness to the story."Toggle Spoiler

it would've been a bit too long as a ~3hr movie, but it works really well as a ~3hr series of short episodes
