I hate this current trend of releasing every god damned song off the album before the album even comes out.

I've just barely listened to the other songs, a general sense of disappointment and also wanting to take in the whole album as one and giving it a fair c hance later, so not much to say about them. This one the first impression is solidly positive, even if it's not particularly fresh or exciting, it just sounds good. I think, while she goes for things I don't want her to go for with this album, we still need her brand of songwriting and lyrics more than ever, because holy crap there are a whole lot of generic, facebook philosophy, 'reach for the stars', generic empty pop lyrics out there right now and her specificity is in a way more needed than ever. First single had a really cringeworthy stance lyrics-wise, but the following ones seem a little better, back to everyday life observations. Not ready to say anything defnitive about that, though, just wanted to chime in and say shit, get back on your A game and free us from the current climate of pop lyrics.

melody sounds like her signature style, I hear some leftover lorde sounds from antonoff's production tho

idk none of her new stuff is bad (ive come around to all of her singles to some degree) it's just...there. very uninspired and feels like she wasnt really ready to make another album just yet but was forced to put out something. this new one feels fully phoned in by both ts and antonoff.

There's a snippet of an acoustic version of Call It What You Want on her Instagram and it sounds sooooo much better

yeah. seems like either theres a lot more effort being put into redefining her persona and aesthetic than writing good songs or that this new persona she's trying to cultivate is actively hamstringing her songwriting.

regardless of how i feel about her attempts at rebranding, all of these songs excepting maybe "gorgeous" are comfortably in the bottom tier of taylor swift tracks

i feel kinda bad though, because it sounds like another personal record for her, and still about the dissolution of relationships - except now its more industry insider focused than about being boy crazy, but it just sounds really hokey and phony. like, i know she had to make it somewhat vague to appeal to the gen pop, and obviously taylor swift can't go full on hard in the paint with takedown verses or, umm.. actually rapping?, so it just kinda falls short to me. ill still listen to it though, and like i said before, we hopefully have a lifetime of style-shifting taylor swift records to look forward to :)

if she didn't have any ideas yet she should have done a writers retreat and stolen the ideas of younger hungrier artists until she was ready to do her thing

or she could have made one of those half assed mixtapes where half the lyrics are laughing and telling the engineer to change the levels
