I quit the job when I moved to Santa Cruz for my gf's grad program. They absolutely loved me, I was the best camera operator they had and I only got the job through nepotism :ugeek:

It was a super dope job, that I would have loved to do forever if I never had any responsibilities (it only paid $10 and hour) but that's for another thread

interesting article! obv u can tell the sentiment is v widespread but i wasnt aware that the idea of identifying it as a specific movement was so embedded to the point where politicians are speaking against it. would love to be fly on the wall for meetings discussing how to tackle sang life.

also seeing the products made outta it ~~~

Xiang has capitalized on the trend with products named after popular "sang" phrases. The chain has single locations in 12 cities after opening its first permanent tea stall in July in Beijing, where a best-selling "sitting-around-and-waiting-to-die" matcha milk tea costs 18 yuan.

https://thewire.in/173987/chinese-millennials-sang-culture-and-tea/

Chinese millennials with a dim view of their career and marriage prospects can wallow in despair with a range of teas such as “achieved-absolutely-nothing black tea”, and “my-ex’s-life-is-better-than-mine fruit tea”.

As someone working at what's basically a nursing home I can assure you that this is possible the cheaper you go/the shittier your insurance is.

I really want a couple of those vapor95 hoodies. I should stop doing drugs and get back into looking nice, but mmmeeehhhhhhhhhhh

Non-Stimulating Contents Laboratory' (무자극 컨텐츠 연구소). It has almost 50k likes, which is quite big for a Korean page since Facebook had a lot more trouble in Korea, and a memepage scene has not yet developed. The page posts pictures taken in day to day life that are as least stimulating as possible. Everything from the accompanying text to the comments are written in a calm and respectful tone to minimise stimulation.
Between photos, the page posts a retrospective on older posts about why some of them were too stimulating, with feedback drawn from the comments. For the cat picture in this post, 12 users said that the picture was stimulating because it was too cute. For the hats picture, one person said that the loneliness of the hat that doesn't get chosen to be worn is stimulating. A lot of people said that the sun was too stimulating in the building wall picture. This practice of posting possible reasons for the slightest of stimulation is a local meme on the page like interpreting the output in the ShitpostBot 5000 comments section.
According to an interview, the page aims to reduce the constant stimulation of exciting updates in Facebook's feed, acting as a resting point for the users. It's surprisingly close to the English, 'anti-negativity' copypasta from a few years ago that encourages users to post their favourite dinosaurs or superheroes to combat all the negativity in the newsfeed. It's touching to see users attempt to deal with the Facebook fatigue in such a similar way despite the cultural divide.

thanks for that sang culture article.

i definitely have strong lack of motivation and apathy when it comes to so many things, nowadays, but my boring career is going a little bit too well for me to consider myself a sang acolyte. existential dread almost every day though for the past couple years. i've never been good at future planning or even just daydreaming about what my future could hold, and now it's just trying to be patient while i see where life takes me, if anywhere at all. maybe sang is just a phase some normies like me pass through.

not much to add except that in korea sang culture is paralleled by or at least similar to a cultural thread called sampo 삼포 (three give-ups) or opo 오포 (five give-ups) referring to a disinterest in or giving up on dating/marriage/having kids or dating/marriage/parenting/career/owning a home. as with "millennial" these seem to be labels that anyone and everyone can throw things at to see what sticks/for entertainment or other purposes, i honestly am nowhere near able to read korean well enough to investigate this suspicion further etc but. given the massive pressure experienced by young koreans within korean society surrounding schooling, employment, and marriage, exerted downward largely by parents/teachers and other older authority figures, i'm unsuprised and it's easy to identify/understand/sympathize with these lines of thought.
