I wish I didn't like playing video games so that I didn't have to have windows on my computer

I know WINE is on Linux, but I just want every game in my steam library to just work

I still hate the unpredictable rebooting, but I've since identified a lot of the infuriating bugs I used to have with Windows 10 as being the result of SSDs that were stealthily failing. I had the bad luck to have this happening to my desktop and laptop at the same time. Since putting a new SSD in my desktop, Windows 10 has been fine.

Paul wrote:not necessarily a windows 10 problem, but I had a PC custom built for my dad and picked it up today. The one thing he really wanted was Outlook so I added Microsoft Office Home & Student to his order for $150. I went to set it up today and turns out it doesn't come with Outlook. I bought that on my own dime for an additional $140. What a fucking ripoff for an email program Gmail could easily beat. I installed it before he got home, I'm not even going to tell him I bought it. He was steamed enough to have to buy Office. That used to be something that just came with a Windows build.

jfc $290 for office and outlook

i just got a notification to install the April update and i googled it and saw that it's caused a bunch of PCs to fail so i'll wait for now. unless it reboots itself at some point and does it anyway

the subscription is what they push and is probably a better deal if you want Outlook too, but it is still for sale in the traditional way

Sucks when you leave an organization that uses it, and you constantly get alerts and warnings that your subscription has expired.

I think you can do all that stuff but it's a lot of work

Some basic stuff I do whenever I get a new Win10 machine:
-Turn off all the Cortana/Task View/etc icons
-Move the taskbar to the side of the screen instead of the bottom
-Turn off all notifications
-Delete all the tiles in the start menu (and then never open the start menu again and only launch apps from the taskbar or Windows+S)

as i mentioned upthread you can customize an ISO and get rid of cortana/xbox stuff/etc. before installing but microsoft doesn't make it very user friendly so i usually use (purchasable) third party tools

there's certainly ways to disable a lot of those things though, too, but it might involve some light registry editing or messing around with group policy to really truly disable!
