I'm just starting in on this book.

I also will vouch for the Insight Timer app.

I like this cause it was my first book ever on this stuff

But also cause you can just open it to any chapter and read it and therefore it’s good to just leave on top of the shitter for friends and guests

yes, this

i've been doing this daily for 2.5 years and it's easily the biggest trap, but it's also really common, so the sooner you can internalize it as lesson the better

supposedly metta/lovingkindness practice toward oneself is really good for undercutting/mitigating this but i haven't really done much yet

The first thing you need to do is turn off the tv and get out of the trump thread. I’m very serious.

So what are we doing here?

You know, in the basic sense

Lotta people here from the depressed thread which is good.

But I’m not sure how we proceed with all this. There’s a certain amount of reading and talking about mindfulness/meditation/etc that is necessary, but the whole thing can also just turn into another bullshit identity, another bullshit goal.

So how do we go about this?

Like maybe the OP should be edited to include a list of various “media” that different people recommend exploring? So we can have that in one place. And then we don’t have to rehash it all 100 times. Then the posting can be more concentrated on discussion of the whole.... thing.

Here’s my reading list:

The kabat-zinn thing, ie wherever you go there you are
That mindfulness in plain English thing
Kabat zinn did a thing with another guy that was mindfulness and depression combined, that was interesting
Bessel van der kolk has a book “the body keeps the score”, which is actually about like ptsd but I find that the whole mind/body connection outlined in this work is really important because mindfulness involves mindfulness of the body/state of muscles and stuff. Maybe file this under related/tangent reading.
Out of Your Mind is a collection of lectures by Alan Watts that’s really good
Wake Up Now is a book by Stephan bodian kinda about non duality that’s p good.
And honest to god, good old The Power of Now by eckhart tolle is pretty goddamned good and probably went way over the heads of all the Oprah’s book club readers

What else

Oh yeah that Walden pond nicca knew a thing too

now, practice:

- don’t be so goddamned serious
- don’t be so goddamned rigid
- don’t get hung up on a Way. Your way is fine too.
- don’t try and get somewhere else
- did you read that last one?
- don’t turn into a detached human because “letting go” is your way. If you actually let go you can be perfectly there and present in life. This isn’t about letting go of reality

I dunno hatever

I would say this is fine, to get started, but keep in mind that

A) there ain’t one truth, so watch out for anyone who claims to have The Way
B) you don’t need to be dependent on someone/thing in order to do this. It’s not as hard as you think. You just need to remember to stop evaluating/rating your performance and trying to achieve something

As Americans were programmed to do something to get a result. That shit don’t apply here. Just do it, don’t sweat it, don’t set expectations, and go forward.

You will have to fight your brain, which will critique you all the way and make you think you’re doing something wrong. You’re not. Your brain is wrong.

I can’t stress this enough, if you do all this with a goal in mind you will fuck yourself over.

So why should you do this?

I don’t know, just because. Maybe you’ll learn something nobody else can teach you.

And sitting down for five hours a Day ain’t the answer either so don’t go thinking you gotta be a fucking monk to work this into your life

I am not articulate enough to explain how all this has worked into my life

And it’s an evolution

And some book will mention instantly “waking up” ina glorious moment and if you hold on to that image you’ll fuck yourself as well. Just fyi

You gotta watch out for the strict practice shit. Like some books will tell you that you gotta contort yoruselfnlike a pretzel and sit on a cushion in a certain way and all this shit

Don’t forget that all this shit cuddles up with capital R religion, and you know how that always goes once humans get involved.

In other words read and learn shit and follow your own path

Turn off all your shit and breathe for 20 minutes. Focus on your breath going into and out of your nose or lungs. 1000 things will pop into your mind. Accept them all and let them all go. Don’t judge your “performance”. Do this for 20 minutes, get up and go about your day. Expect nothing.

yeah as i said upthread wolfie's right to emphasize watching expectation, and with that in mind i'm reluctant to give a lot of reading reccs. seungsahn supposedly was fond of pointing out "open mouth and already make mistake" and then pointing out that we still have to use language to communicate this stuff, anyway. you just have to try and not get too 'caught' by the explications you do read. one of the retreat leaders i just did a retreat with, mark coleman, said something to the effect of "these teachings are really very simple - it's putting them into practice that is difficult," which i've been trying to keep in mind, since i'm really prone to getting "caught" myself.

so yeah, do a body scan or guided breathing meditation like the ones on the MBSR website or insight timer or whatever, then whenever you're ready after an indeterminate chunk of time transition to doing it in silence. it's much less how you're doing it and more that you just do it with some amount of consistency. think of it like physical exercise for your mind. you wouldn't go to the gym and then continually watch for changes and get disappointed when they don't immediately appear, but after a few months you might one day, spontaneously, notice some results, or you might not, but you know that it's good or you and you should do it so you do. it's like building up neuronal strength. sort of.

oh also there is a fair amount of research/evidence that suggests doing it in a group is helpful both for consistency/motivation and also can sort of potentiate the effect, so finding a local meditation group or zen temple or whatever can be helpful. go to a daylong or just a sunday sit or whatever.

Watch out for these meditation apps that track your time and “progress” and just turn it into another game, another thing to be good at, another thing to not be good enough at, etc

yeah, i don't even pay any attention to that function of insight timer purposefully. i think they try and mitigate the potential for that effect by limiting the length of "milestones," so it will give you one for 20 days with a session and nothing further than that (it resets), but it still has graphs and other ways of quantifying things that are pretty questionable in their usefulness.

oh also insight timer seemingly has little to no filter for who can add guided meditations and when, so while really well respected teachers have ones on there, there'll also be some idiot's KUNDALINI EGO ANNIHILATION meditations, too, so just use common sense if choosing or look up the person who posted it
