Easily the favorite for Best Picture in 2018. I didn't even necessarily love it, the story seems like a flimsy construction, but it's just so goddamned dazzling. I'm impressed by how unvarnished and slightly weird it is at times, given how hard this steers into Oscarbait in other ways.

thanks for posting this, was curious about since I'm checking out the del Toro exhibition at the AGO tonight

rewatched Pan's Labyrinth last night and forgot how much I loved it
I've got to say sorry for that.

The Post and Dunkirk are basically its only competition.

I haven't seen The Post, but we have no reason to have faith in Spielberg delivering an Oscar winner. New screenwriter is a wildcard, but Josh Singer (former Sorkin camp) wrote Spotlight, which was overrated.

I think the dark horse competition is a certain other movie about a human who befriends a monster... It's called Monster Trucks.

Actually I forgot that Spotlight won. Damn. We been having some tough years for these types of movies, and this year is no different.

But those who know Academy politics: When was the last time they gave it to a crowdpleaser (impromptu standing Os for GDT and Sally Hawkins) that checked off so many Oscarbait boxes?

if you enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth you should check out Cronos and The Devil's Backbone. I also ride hide for Pacific Rim and Mimic, but those might not be as up your alley

accidentally ate a too-large portion of edibles before this and thought i was going into cardiac arrest the whole movie

it was pretty good i think! flawed but ambitious, looked great, sally hawkins ruled, michael shannon played a more confident version of his boardwalk empire character, good score, questionable pacing
