I keep looking for self help reading to deal with my justified feelings of despair about the current trajectory of the U.S. and the world, and coming up short. If anyone comes across any reading that helps you stay motivated to keep trying to make things better in a nightmare world, or helps you have hope, please drop it off in this thread.

Try to shift from a God's Eye perspective towards a more egocentric one. Avoid watching the news for a while. Fill your life with things that appeal to you and those you love and fuck the future. There's no need to subject yourself to the atrocity exhibition every waking minute of your life, that's just a straight up recipe for insanity.

I've been enjoying reading folks who are celebratory in the face of societal and ecological collapse. Stuff like Paul Kingsnorth's "Dark Ecology" (outlined in Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist) can provide some kinda hope in hopelessness. We just had a big ol anarchist commune blocking the train tracks to keep fracking materials from getting out of the port and the vibe down there was emancipatory til the cops smashed it up. Forget about buying a house and retiring and all that nuclear family crap foisted upon us by the folks who ruined the world.

We have the gift of living in a world where there is HD footage of baby ducks jumping off trees and bouncing on their bellies

did it with my dad a few months ago. it's good but it's also bad as there's no end in sight and the only solution would be for him to become a fundamentally different person

anyway, still hopeful for the future

I like this but it's very difficult to maintain this kind of perspective. Esp with internet addiction.

Although I don't think egocentrism is really a solution. I want to get away from myself and my stupid hangups and desires.

Kinda sorta. My baseline perspective is focusing on your immediate desires is healthier than existing in a fugue state of anxiety at the woes of the world, so long as those immediate desires aren't self destructive. It's an easier solution than trying to transcend the self, know what I mean? If you're able to put aside 40 minutes for meditation and yoga every day, good on ya and I hope you achieve enlightenment. But for us shitty addicts sometimes it's better to get addicted to something like uhh, learning how to whittle and jogging. I use egocentrism in the sense of a more grounded, inward perspective rather than "I want to satisfy all of my desires at all times".

Yeah, I agree. I think getting outside yourself by helping others or meditation or whatever is also good from time to time. I tend to get fixated on being creative or my hobbies and it can get me feeling locked in. But it's better than drinking my pain away.

Thank you, my friends. My current job involves constant media consumption and I can't leave it right now. The reading fiction recommendation is definitely up my alley and something I should get back into. I'll check out bad craziness' book recs too. There is still good in the world and things worth fighting for, up to and including videos of baby ducks!

Also generally making dumb jokes and being irreverent about the absurdity of life is helpful in alleviating the grimness.

If everyone took themselves less seriously I think the world would be a lot better. Kinda hard in our dumb winners and losers capitalist society tho.
