was very jealous when i went to southern ohio in winter and realised they could close school for days if they even got like 10cm of snow. Obviously they don't have the infrastructures in place to deal with this efficiently but fuck back home you'd get 20cm snowstorms and -30 and they'd be like nah there's still school. Actually usually we didn't have snow days so much as cold days. If it was gonna be -30 even at noon then they might give us the day off. But snow, you had to hope for a real freak storm to get days off for snow.
Feels like i've been really cheated in my youth because of this. Not much in life will ever measure up to what i felt when i'd hear my mom shout from downstairs "you can stay in bed, no school today". I've never used drugs but frankly i'm not sure if even heroin gets you there. MAYBE.
I must insist on being a pessimist, I'm a loner in a catastrophic mind

I am a teacher in Minnesota. We never get snow days... It was icy yesterday and took me an extra hour to get to work.

I think we had one snow day growing up and one day where we could go home early (I couldn't) as an adult. Fucking Canada

going to catholic school in lexington, ky, we got snow days way less often the public schools did (like, maybe one day for every three they got off) whenever it did happen though, it was incredible. definitely a part of youth that i miss
the best, though, was when school was cancelled in junior high because a squirrel chewed through a power line

I went to a private high school in DC and I believe because it so old, Congress has set their charter up, with little input or care, and it didn't say how many days in the school year were required. Which meant that one year where we had a few major snow storms back to back, we had something like 6 days of class on February and all we did to make up for it was take off a Monday holiday or two in the spring. it was really wonderful. We also followed the Maryland school systems for days off, which by all accounts we certainly more generous that the Northern VA ones.

the fuck is that about
A few years ago, it was 17 degrees in Atlanta and they cancelled school. Everyone made fun of us, but my students at the time had to walk 1/2 mile to school from the train and most of them did not have proper coats because it's cold like 10 days a year. They just have hoodies.
lexington regularly gets cold in the winter though, and they would just randomly cancel because it was like 25, temperatures that were reached pretty much every year

Yeah I had the same experience. To make matters worse our name began with a "t" (and the other private schools came even later in the alphabet) so you had to listen to pretty much the whole list of schools that were closed to find out you didn't have the day off.
