buying "imports" at record stores in the early 90s

Ive found in time the search on this forum was shit but if you google whatever keywords with the word hipinion, you get what you're looking for most of the time. I mean even when they keywords aren't exact.

I took the five finger discount at Tower Records at Clark & Belden on Bauhaus "In The Flat Field" UK Import
The answer is simple: artisanship.

Looking up those Nirvana bootlegs was probably like 90% of my internet usage for the first year or two that I had access.

I flipped past so many anti-theft plastic CD handle/cases with like Metallica-related NWOBHM imports but fuck if I can recall ever actually buying one. Too damn expensive.

Any bootleg that had "fuck" in the title went up in points.

Where these ever behind a glass counter next to the clerk for anyone else? Like they were too precious to even handle or sift through.

Upon first discovering these, I enthused to a friend that Pearl Jam and Nirvana had tons of other secret albums and that the 2 or 3 available studio albums were just the tip of the iceberg. Outcesticide was legit good though.

somewhat related: paying 11 dollars for a maxi single for one b-side. I remember one time it was "dirty frank" by pearl jam, that stung pretty bad.

Before it got Clear Channeled to hell, the relatively free-form alt-rock station I listened to on occasion in the early 90's had a nightly program called Gimme the Grunge. The point of it was to play the more "obscure" stuff like Tad, Mudhoney, Melvins, etc. Still, they'd throw in the rarer tracks from the big bands, which is how I first heard "Dirty Frank". I remember thinking it was a goofy song, but then also I was never a Pearl Jam fan.

That same station also had a two-hour show on Sunday nights that was basically like 120 Minutes. I can't remember the name of the program, but I listened to it regularly.

my only bootleg was Guns N Roses, taken from their 1988 show at the Ritz
it sounds good and the performance is prime Appetite era, guess I lucked out
whereas imports in stores were $40, there were often guys at markets selling dubious live CDs for $10 or so, this was one of those
I think I got it before I actually had any (tape dubs from the library of) studio albums

My listening experience in balanced mode reveals the great depth of EARTH

I paid $20 for this, it was okay, had a handful of great songs.
edit: looking at the list of songs, I definitely did not realize how many of these were not just cover songs, but well known cover songs.

Tower was definitely the best chain store. Virgin Megastore wasn't bad, either, as far as chain record stores went.
