a) What James Bond drank in Fleming's 'Casino Royale' is a martini in reference only. He asks for a dry martini made with a ratio of 3 gordons to 1 vodka and a half measure of kina lillet shaken with a lemon twist. Gordon's gin at the time was 47% and change, the vodka at the time was 50%abv, and kina lillet was bitter as fuuuuuuck and far removed from what we know as Lillet blanc now. It was meant as a send up to Vespar Lynd being a Russian double agent, hence the inclusion of vodka and the bitterness. It is strictly a martini as it is made with a clear spirit and a 'vermouth' (an aromatised fortified wine, which Lillet very much is) but is a variation at best, with a key component that leads me to the next point...
b) Dry martinis are bullshit. You want 2 or 3 ounces of hard liquor stirred with ice? no problem, but what you're asking for is not a martini. Vermouth is at least as important in a martini as the spirit, probably more. Vermouth is a fortified wine, but it's still fucking wine, so those gross vermouth bottles sitting on the back-bar of your local for years are going to taste fucking awful. Vermouth is not the problem, spoiled product is. A Martini is made with vermouth, sometimes a lot of it, and makes your chosen spirit more delicious because of it. If you want chilled hard liquor just ask for that instead of a fucking martini.
