to me, the woman is clearly a romantic interest (as implied by the dancing at the end), but she initially takes the form of a bear because he perceives falling in love as something to fear

I was working at a call center a million years ago. One of the people I was taking a call from said, "It's going to be ok. Don't worry." I had to go down to the basement to change a fuse a little while later. The basement was constructed to be a nuclear fallout shelter in the 50's. I found a collection of empty jugs down there. I blew into the largest of the jugs and dust (ghosts?) flew out and landed on only one thing. A washboard.
