an insane quote from the preview of The Incredible Rise of Mumford & Sons:

"The music, according to the group, is what drives them - and exactly what distinguishes them from artists like Justin Bieber. Quietly contemptuous of his showbiz counterpart, Marcus delivered a powerful blow of annihilation to the teenage singer and his "Beliebers" without so much as a single slur. "For us," he admitted, "the acid test for any artist would be, 'Could we give this dude a mandolin and just jam?'"

Have other hartists explored time lapse footage of traffic and cities in their music videos? It seems pretty applicable now that I think about it

i'm watching the avett bros documentary and I'm pretty sure their album emotionalism is actually the hooting/whistling/stomping bros ur-album

here's what pitchfork said:

"The Avett Brothers' Emotionalism is the most contrived record I've heard this year. It's also one that, like my kitchen table, I've returned to, compulsively and without expectation, for comfort and familiarity. My stupid little bromide, maybe. And what the band-- two brothers and a friend from Concord, North Carolina-- lacks in subtlety, they make up for with embarrassing persistence: Song after song, stumbling through country, bluegrass, orchestral pop, and early Beatles-style pop-rock, they never waste a chance to harmonize or wail, to loose one beat-down sentiment after another, to back-pat or console."

that album came out may 2007, the same month that youtube launched the partner program so that people could get paid for generating content, setting the stage for the sessions ecosystem to start flourishing

mtv unplugged basically ends, and tiny desk starts in 2009, and the avett brothers are one of the first handful of shows, playing in june 2009.
later that year mumford and sons debut with sigh no more, in october 2009. they hit the billboard year end chart in 2010 at number 83, then 2011 sigh no more ends the year at number 8

what I was not expecting though, was this:

there is something that is very...something...about these two bands playing what amount to rock songs (but on traditional instruments!!!!!) masquerading as sincere folk saying fuck pop music and then backing up bob dylan on his song that basically amounts to “fuck you pete seeger/the folk scene im gonna play pop music!!”

"We are all the same, all three bands," Old Crow Medicine Show singer Willie Watson says early in the film. "Even the Mumfords are pretty grimy. They've got grease and mustard stains on their pants just like us.”

i think this is from the film “big easy express”

maybe going going out on a limb here but i think true hoot is rock songs played on acoustic instruments to latch on to the growing popularity of americana and packaged for mass appeal. an over reliance on tempo/dynamics instead of actually being musically interesting, and the stomping/kick drum pounding/whistling rather than playing solos. rural cosplay is an aesthetic element but gets adopted by bands playing regular ol’ roots music to latch on to the hoot aesthetic in a weird feedback loop.
