I want to see it again jsut because

i thought about this too. i thought maybe annie's sleepwalking attempt to kill her children with fire was a subconscious/repressed attempt at disrupting the ritual from occurring. or even her purposefully trying to have the miscarriage.
also damn @ both of those clues you mentioned. thas crazy. i'm for sure gonna see this film againToggle Spoiler

Haven't read the whole thread, but my friends and I just got out of a matinee showing with an annoying old guy who talked and yawned loudly and said, "Hmm." after every other scene. At one point he actually fucking asked, "Are they really in a miniature?" Then he proceeded to ask it like three more times after that.
YEAH, DUDE. EVERYONE WAS IN ONE OF THE MOM'S MINIATURES THE ENTIRE TIME.

can’t stop thinking about this dang movie. i have been thinking a bit about my first post, i felt a little critical of its length. it does the dread stuff so well, and i do really like the family drama. these are all good actors and they have enough to work with. i just read david sims review though and i think i agree with it almost exactly. basically, this movie could have been a tad better as either a 90 minute thriller or another 15 minutes thrown on as primarily a family drama, that it’s kind of stuck in the middle a bit so it feels a little long or clunky at times. they introduce the dog and the dog shows up exactly twice more, i wanna see the cut scenes.

Not trying to be snarky but if you eliminate the family drama minutes then you’re left with a probably forgettable Netflix movie.

lol, while everyone else was mesmerized by the intro camera work that seamlessly transitions from the miniature to the real peter's room, this old man was thinking "HMM OK SO THESE ARE LITTLE PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN THIS TOY HOUSE, GOT IT"

This should say a well-made Netflix movie.

i definitely applaud erring on the side of ambitious. i think if you cut this movie down you get something close to oujia 2, a lean genre flick (which rules). this movie reminds me a bit of oujia 2 (and im sure a ton of other horror movies) structurally, with two acts devoted to establishing important family dynamics and story and a wild final sequence. this one puts on the dread more evenly, with almost no lighter fare even in the first two acts, and i think attempts to tell a more complicated/interesting story. i think it succeeds mostly, so much so that i wish it was just a bit longer so it gave the characters even more time to interact.

yeah I loove Flanagan's Ouija. Hereditary is obviously a better acted/directed/shot movie overall, but Ouija was a scarier film IMO. there are a lot of lasting images from that film that have stuck with me

also ive seen more people complain about theater-going experiences w/ this movie online than like any other movie ever? it sounds like one out of every three people had at least someone shitty in the audience. there was an older couple when i saw it who were kind of annoying, doing that loud whispering thing, thinking they're quiet but not. kept asking obvious questions and then kept doing the tongue click ugh.

I honestly thought it would be funny to do a loud tongue click noise when the theater was absolutely dead silent and freak everyone out, but as I am a mostly grown, mature man, I held back that impulse.

are there many jump scares in this? i don't watch much horror but caught like, The Witch and It Follows and The Wailing etc, and my mileage with those was basically in order of how much they relied on jumps, or how angry the jumps made me, lol

My experience was the worst one I've had in a while. The crowds for The Witch and It were both pretty bad, but nothing like the annoying old people behind us. Like, after The Witch ended, I heard a few "that was fuckin' stupid" or something. This fucking guy during Hereditary had to loudly cough and clear his sinuses for a solid five minutes right at the beginning of the movie after offering his hot takes on every trailer shown (all of them being "I don't think so" with the exception of the dumb Mark Wahlberg movie). Then when the movie ended, he belched out, "That was lame" like he was forced to watch the movie at gunpoint and at no point did it dawn on him that maybe the movie wasn't for him and he should probably just cut his losses and leave and he lacked the wherewithal to piece the various clues together and the self-awareness and restraint that governs another person who recognizes that, despite theater-going being a shared, communal experience, attendees are there for the movie, not their neighbor's dumb thoughts.

No, there's basically no jump scares
it's actually more the opposite really, where scary things are hidden in the wide frame and become visible

The majority of people in my theater were LAUGHING. A lot. Not like a ‘this is so fucked up I need to vent something’ laugh. But like finding actual comedy at a lot of line readings that weren’t actually funny.

Anyway, the movie ruled. I'm a sucker for slow-burning dread and a looming presence of something else and arcane mythology and religious apocrypha and shit. Plus everyone acted the hell (ahee) out of this and it was well-shot and -lit and there were interesting choices made for the scares.

my audience wasn't laughing consistently but there were a few people that did laugh occasionally at some line readings. mainly @ charlie, and also near the end
when annie-demon silently breaststroked thru the air behind PeterToggle Spoiler

surprised no one has mentioned how there seemed to be like several direct references to Twin Peaks The Return
some stylistic, others like basically full on cribbing.

Yeah, I encountered this shit, too. The first time you see
Toni Collette flyingToggle Spoiler, some dumb assholes laughed. wtf, why are you laughing? Then they continued to laugh every time it happened and the annoying old guy behind me said, "Oh, jeez" as if he wasn't the one who theorized that a human family was actually living inside a miniature.
