Some backstory - I was semi-pro in 2006, played in a WS event, and claimed $20k in winnings on my taxes that year. I walked from the game as I wasn't progressing, sensed online poker was on the edge of getting regulated (was more right than I knew!) I ended up focusing on Martial Arts for a few years, then did retro video games (as is documented in the retro gaming thread).

But..... I suppose, here we go back to donkville. I ended up in a Manhattan cardroom in early January and found myself feeling the juice again. Lost a couple hundred there, but sensed my game had aged decently, so I played in a few live Chicagogland area Rockford Charitable Games events during the week I got back. Threw $500 at a live bankroll, played four tournaments, and ended up 3rd, 5th, 2nd and 1st, turning it into $1200. Also bought in online for $500 at Ignition (not really a great site -looking for recs there) and I've turned that into $1100 so far. Really not liking the cashout options on that site or their awful software. Would love to hear recs for US players looking to make illegal money.

Mostly doing tourneys, as that's my strong suit, but splashing the occasional cash game in. Gonna try to satellite for a seat at a $300 tourney this weekend.

Anybody else living the dream lately?

Man I haven't played poker in years

Made a bit of money out of it and did well in a few tournies when I was university (online player mostly) - this was around 2006-08 when the boom was happening, so a fairly straightforward and disciplined tight-aggressive approach (standard Harrington on Hold 'Em strat) was pretty successful.

Haven't really played since 2010 or so when the game seemed to have moved on and whatever edge I had was gone. I do enjoy tournament poker, but I just don't have the time for it

I was at the game up on 44th /6th or thereabouts. There are some real pros/regulars there, especially late at night on the main table, but also some rich cash stations. I hit some weird variance that night.

Text that number and go through the verification process. It’s pretty legit and I would go again.

i played online a bit when i was unemployed (in 2014 or so?) and ran my free bonus on 888 up to 1k. never deposited anything. lost it all in a particularly bad run combined with bad bankroll management. ran way under ev. i basically quit afterwards but occasionally play shitty tourneys and spin n gos when i'm in the mood

would be keen on playing live but there's no casino here. played a bit in vegas a couple years ago and got destroyed as i'm not used to playing live games. fun though!

In a really weird coincidence, WSOP main event third place finisher in ‘95 Brent Carter just called me. We have been out of touch for about 10 years.

Sure man. There are usually two tables, sometimes three. They funnel from the third table to the second to the main. Get there earlier like 6pm to 8pm if you don’t want to wait.

The craziest thing I saw that night was that the Skinny guy to my left on the 2nd table built his $500 up to $1300 in like 6 hands with no showdowns. I could not get a read. Then a young kid gets called in from 3rd table with $600 (he had just stacked two people AI three ways on the hand before). First hand he flops the nut flush and takes $400 from skinny guy who turned top two. Second hand flop J86 two spades and they are heads up with standard raises before. Check to Skinny guy he bets $50 gets smooth called. Turn blank 2 is checked through. river is a King, no flush, kid checks. Skinny guy snaps all in for $515. Young kid thinks about it for a good three minutes, calls with A6 and is good. Up $1100 in two hands. It was a crazy good read of a stone cold $500 bluff

You can show up with $200 but I wouldn’t show up with less than $500.

I play on ignition but I’ve heard America’s Card Room is also good. At both you can play a $50 tourney.

If you do show with $200, play for $60 at a time and you are playing short stack poker. Try to take three shots to double it

Rollercoaster week at Hideaway Central. Took some bad beats and some ill-advised tourney entries pressing and ended up stuck for about $600 from my high water mark. Then decided to take a shot at the $300+$25 big tourney anyway, and ended up doubling through twice on some choice opportunities only to get stacked in hour three when my pocket queens lost to pocket jacks on the river AI preflop. No worries, I want my money always in the center that big of a favorite. Was feeling a bit discouraged with a -$950 swing, but this morning I was able to rally and win a $6 Rebuy + Addon tourney for a smooth $330 and also win a couple of sit and gos which puts me back to evenish in the online world overall, with a healthy $700 profit live

Current $ stats:

America's Cardroom $500 invested, current balance $558
Ignition Casino $500 invested, current balance $492
Live Bankroll $500 invested, current balance $1201

the current plan is to build the online bankroll back up to +$150-$300 and take another big shot. Live I'm gonna try to hit a casino or Rockford Charitable one night this week

I sat at the $2/$5 Rockford game tonight and OMFG is that game crazy and juicy. There’s no upper end on what you can sit with at the main game, some guys had $5-$7k in front of them. One rich drunk cash station was stuck for at least $4k. I was mostly down about $300-$500 all night on a buyin of $1200 but on the third to last hand I floated with 6h5h in middle position. B.B. raised to 40, rich drunk cash station called in front of me and I caught a call tell behind me so I decided to continue the float, especially because drunk ATM was in. Flop was 6c 5d 2h. Drunk ATM leads with $175, I raised to $375 and big blind just calls. Uh oh. Drunk folds. Turn is a Qc and big blind puts me all in for $414. I make him for kings or aces, and call after thinking about it for a couple minutes to review the action. He flips over kings thinking he’s way ahead of 88 or 99 and when he sees my hand he flips out and when the river hits a 10s he starts saying NICE FUCKING CRACK YOU.... and just picks up the rest of his chips and storms off. Ultimately turned $1200 into $1780.

I sat at a high limit Hold em game where the blinds were $2 and $5 every hand but instead of the maximum buyin being the usual 100x the big blind (in this case $500) it was anything goes, so some people had like $7 grand in front of them. There was probably a total of $13-$15 grand in the table

When I say I Float - I called a raise to see what happens. I had a low suited connector, two sequential hearts, which is the kind of hand you want in a drawing situations, and my read was that in addition to the drunk guy being in this hand, I caught a tell someone behind was also going to call, which increased my pot odds to play a drawing hand against a made one.

I was in middle position meaning I was a few positions away from the blinds and the button. The guy raising before the first three community cards are dealt (the flop) was in the big blind, which means he was second to act of ten and he would always acting before me. The drunk guy was right after him and before me.

B.B. - big blind
Flop - the first three community cards dealt
Turn - the fourth community card dealt
River - the final community card dealt

I flopped top two pair when my 65 hit 652, and knew I was beating drunk guy who was on the donate but was taken aback when my raise drew a snap (quick) call from the big blind because it meant he had a monster. I figured he had an overpair (two paired cards above the values on the board). When the q hit on the turn, I was a little afraid that I might be against QQ and dead, but then I remembered his flat call of my raise on the flop. I can’t see him slowplaying queens because an A or K could hit the turn. I actually put him on Kings and was right.

Thank you for that. I realized the source of my confusion was forgetting that two pair beats a single pair
