To clarify: email is inherently insecure and you should never send anything sensitive in it.

well its not my problem, as long as i dont add non-employees to the god damn chain.

the department i was emailing contacted me about it and said that they make this sort of mistake all the time (!!!) and i shouldn't feel too bad (i do).

i agree with nathan tho that its your own dumb companies fault for having these sorts of lax procedures in the first place. that sort of stuff should be heavily encrypted.

my understanding is that microsoft exchange somehow meets the encryption standards of HIPAA but yeah they really should have systems in place for attached files

You might get lucky and her email was already shutdown by the provider since it was being used for scamming.

Both Google Apps and Microsoft Office 365 offer ways to send secure email messages now. I think where you can delete the attachments.

I don't think HIPAA says anything about this, but it doesn't matter when your straight up email the info to a third party lol

Tell Nancy she's party to a HIPAA violation, punishable by a fine of up to $95 but you'll let it go if she PayPal's you $90
