I like children of men more, but pan's labyrinth is no slouch. why did one have to take sides?

zodiac is the only time i've been caught off guard by a movie cause i went to the theatre on a lonely weekday when i was 17 and didn't have class and i just picked a movie based on the poster and i had no idea what it was or who made it or anything and then i had my brains blown out about 10 minutes in

yea the second long take was the first time I noticed "really long take" in a movie. thought it was incredible how they pulled that off. the first one is impressive in a more subtle claustrophobic way but it's the second one that really called attention to itself in a showy way.

someone mentioned it earlier, but the way it creates a lived-in future/dystopia is one of its greatest achievements. i think i read an interview with cuaron where he talked about how they deliberately avoided making it look "futuristic" in the traditional sense and aimed to make it look basically like the present outside of a handful of details, and that pays off


Yeah, absolutely brilliant movie. Downloaded the torrent whenever it hit TPB not knowing much about it. That explosion scene, in the beginning, is something I still think about quite often. The torrent included the added analysis of the movie by Zizek, et al, that was on the DVD. I bought the DVD immediately afterwards.
