If you're trying to make sense of the world and something isn't intuitive to you, what are you gonna do? I don't think this New Boarder is really looking to change his mind, but on the other hand debate and discussions never change anyone's mind, it's all about passive & ambient social pressure.
I agree on this but I will say that I've seen firsthand how debate and discussions can change peoples minds
but it's so rare and when it happens it's usually the result of a long and torturous process, so much so that most of the time it's not worth the effort

i made the mistake of getting deep into both twitter and r/television threads about this. glutton for punishment i guess

agreed and it bugs me personally because the Simpsons is easily my biggest pop culture touchstone and I just don't get why so many people feel personally offended by having to acknowledge it has problematic elements.
I posted on nohomers when I was in high school. If I can come to terms with this, anyone can

being able to say "i like it but it's bad" gives me the unconscious emotional enjoyment of something but also the cognitive rational satisfaction of destroying it

Which is why I'm so glad The Simpsons provided a nice dividing line in quality so I can file all the bad stuff against latter day and stick my head in the sand about the Glory days

True. At a certain point though these online kerfuffles become tedious and a zero sum game. You're not gonna convince everyone you're right about anything but somehow the internet makes people think they Must Win Every Last Argument. Reasonable people will recognize the problematicness of Apu, take what lessons from that what they will and move on with their lives.
Some folk'll never recognize racial stereotypes And then again some folk'll...

I get where Antoine's coming from with his post, just wanted to jump in and say that it's not stupid at least on a personal level. If fighting every battle is doing bad stuff for you it's good to take a break especially online where everything is fucking rediculous.
You can't even get everybody on hipinion to agree Apu is racist, much less the entire web

So when you ask whether people wre "happier" when people we're not analyzing sitcoms, you gotta ask who exactly the "people" are in that sentence
I get this, I guess I was more talking about the people on this board specifically, which is still like 80% white dudes, arguing amongst themselves about issues that don't affect them directly. Blurst of Times' post a few pages back was really good and enlightening, but was barely noticed because there's some clueless rando to pile on. I think the ratio of posts that I can actually learn something from to endless parroting of the same thing is like 1:50. I'm probaby not explaining this well.
seems like a pretty decent response! wish the other simpsons writers/showrunners would get a clue, but this is still good. now if they'd just hire me to be a writer...
