Whenever a disembodied voice whispers - and it can’t be just, like, billowing voices emanating around a house, but rather a targeted manifestation of something - it freaks me out. I’m thinking of Black Philip’s voice in the Witch or the voice in Session 9. Mercedes McCambridge as the voice of the demon in the Exoricst is almost there, but gets way too vulgar and ostentatious. It has to be a controlled whisper.
