I have this feeling that maybe around 2007 to 2011 there was this really great kind of organic music scene that had come up around the internet. The internet was wide open and everybody was making music, writing about music, and promoting music. Everybody was doing it out of a sense of real passion. And then somewhere starting maybe in 2012, the internet coalesced into this sort of clickbaity industry thing, and a lot of what was appearing on the internet about the music that I liked was becoming listicles and clickbait. It was getting much harder to find good music, I felt like, and the quality of things that were appearing was getting lower and lower..

i had assumed there was a point of saturation that was reached

and also a significant number of people trying to make it started realizing there wasn't any money in it. they'd go broke sticking with it.

Spotify launched in the US in July of 2011. If you're inclined to believe that this is in fact a thing, I feel like that could have played into it. Made accessing and discovering music a lot easier. Although, it was still pretty easy to access and discover music in 2011.

Ah, yes, I remember going online in 2007-2011, which is now known as the golden age of the internet lol. Everything was on blogspot and mediafire before spotify (some stuff still is). pretty easy to find shit just google "[artist name + album title] blogspot" or "[artist name + album title] mediafire" or "[artist name + album title] rar" or "[artist name + album title] zip". Or torrent.

It was easier to collect music illegally but it was also a period where any number of niche bands and curators of microgenres were given equal import and relative publicity

For me, there was a greater joy of discovery in the MP3 era (then), than the streaming era (now). Is that what he is talking about?

I feel it had started happening already by 2007 but i would say that 2011 sounds about right for the end of it.

I used it for a while in the 00s but I felt like the content/quality of the app dropped for a while and stopped but then came back when torrent sites got too bothersome.

My username "lesspetty" came from my soulseek account name because it was the only username I hadn't used anywhere else because I was afraid of being 2upped
