went to Galena a couple of times as a kid but my memories are very vague. For whatever reason, all I remember is a swimming pool/water park type of place

I went to the Dells once as a kid. We ate at a cowboy-themed restaurant called Black Bart's that was supposed to have "wild, gunslinging theatrics" or whatever. It turned out to be just a guy in a black cowboy hat and black clothes walking around, playing the part of the outlaw by insulting children in front of their parents.

Do you have 7 year olds? If not, no.
Go to the UP or Sleeping Bear Dunes or something

This is the correct answer.
If you have a bunch of friends who like to drink and ride water slides, it works. But this is mainly a kid place.
Dells ain't cheap either.

the only thing that really sucks is the insane traffic that can build up around weekends
remember when gatlinburg was ravaged by that wildfire a year or two ago

Not really surprising.
