Loved this more than I expected! I dug the whole acid dripping occult vibe - incredible sense of menace. Sound design was out of this world. See it folks

all i can think of days later is how much i would've preferred this, especially because of the movie name

like why does the cult give a fuck about cage, would've made more sense for them to force mandy to witness him burning/lose everything to atone for her rejection of them (which was an amazing scene, that guy's music holy fuck)

as it was it was just lazy drawn out misogyny status quo dressed up with filters

They were logging the nearby forest to build Jeremiah Sand's temple

This was dope

Every actor was putting in serious work with their face

I'm totally fine with Panos Cosmatos putting out a VHS-worshipping Z-list grunge flick every five years

i was 100% pleased seeing beyond the black rainbow in theaters when it came out and it's nice seeing audiences give it another chance after Mandy's release

man i loved it, and not just because nic cage

i've been getting into pulp fantasy lately and this is basically a conan movie in a modern-ish setting. hero loses everything, forges a weapon, slays some monsters, delves into a dungeon, infiltrates an evil cult, and murders the villainous wizard. with all that fantastical imagery it's gotta be what he was going for.

also that look on cage's face at the very end

almost definitely my favorite take on that very specific genre on film

I think the animated bits were probably the part I liked least

The matte painting-style BGs in the final act were supremely sick

They seemed like they were objectifying Mandy in a weird way, primarily. There were other things I didn't dig, but those are really secondary. The film is already :? enough without the illustrated titillation.

Edit: I didn't realise Architecture was specifically talking about the animated parts, I thought they were talking about the whole movie. I don't really remember all of the content of the animated sections and there may well have been some objectification in there

and I agree with Architecture that the animated sections were weak just because in general animated segments in live action movies are something I don't really like for tedious reasons that I won't go into

also to the people that are saying they would have liked to see the script flipped, and mandy herself go on a killing spree to avenge cage's immolation - even in that scenario you can end up with a movie like this year's Revenge where the avenging lead character is objectified as hell

I thought the plot twist was gonna be that she was still alive and they burned the chubby blonde kid that just disappeared while at their house.
