Modernism is a context-dependent, calculated aesthetic form. A maneuvering within a framework.
Futurism is a felt sentiment, an imaginative orientation out of which certain emotive states often arise. It’s creative expression is shaped by the cultural fabric, but the sentiment beneath the artifacts is more universal. In it’s most explicit form, it is somewhat romantic.
1 Romantic futurism goes in and out of fashion.
2 There are some musical devices that capture it better than others.
If the album sounds retro, I guess, it’s because I wanted it to sound soft and VCR-ish. To that end I used some tape saturation, rolled off treble, and mastered it softly. That textural decision could be described as retrograde, & fairly so. But the implied assertion that super pristine dreamworks High Def is the only viable form of modernism is itself, perhaps, questionable. Are warmth & haze, out of date? The future is cold and pristine?
or what, do emotional states go in and out of fashion? idk maybe they do
