this is cool. i didn't realize how limited that original pressing was.

this is a really good description of the record:
As Cindy Lee's first long-form statement, Act Of Tenderness makes use of antipodal themes to create a living sound: static with grace, distortion and sugar, all masterfully arranged with crooked nods toward pop classicism.

i feel like there's a post to be made re the divergent arcs/sonics of VC/Preoccs and Cindy Lee but im on my phone rn

basically, do you think this is even the music that Preoccs want to make at this point? or, due to having some stature in the "hype economy"/indie label infrastructure (far more than CL, which has courted obscurity wilfully), are there compromises being made wrt these projects? or is this just my sad way of trying to rationalize Preoccs making bad/toothless music in comparison to CL, which is probably one of my favourite working projects?

From my mind, I honestly do think the name-outrage stalled whatever momentum they'd built up from Cassette and the ST. Changing up the sound to focus more on the synth-elements under the Preoccupations banner as opposed to the sort of cold, pointed post-punk they were doing as Vietcong was probably intended to put distance between them and the controversy, but in effect, it sucked out what made them compelling to begin with.

yeah this sucked. but, it was their own fault A) choosing a name so problematic; and B) not bothering to have a thought-out aesthetic or social justification for choosing such a name in the first place. I mean, B probably would have blown up in their faces no matter what they did, such are the times we live in, so they were fucked from the start.

just start over, new band name/new members, old guitar sound pls

Oh, yeah. Their rationale was absolutely atrocious. "LOL All the bad guys in 1980s action movies were Vietcong and we thought it sounded cool" was just, yeah. Bad. That said, you could make a coherent argument for the name.

Maybe they should have renamed themselves "Charlie." Or ARVN.

i feel like with women's two albums (and some of the viet cong s/t) there's like a post-90's framework of fugazi/radiohead etc influence that makes it stand out a bit so they're not just "post-punk revival" and that's kinda why they're unique or interesting to listen too.

definitely seems like the sound women had was just like a shot out of the blue or something. i'm glad they existed.

I liked the first Preoc album more than most people here but this new song just sounds like Factory Records fan fiction or something. I'll still give the album a listen but kind a snoozer of a single.
