funding was decent through year 5 (tuition paid and stipend with no requirements for TAing).
now stipend is no more and tuition is $2000/yr unless i TA in which case it's waived.

the university dicked us around compared to the deals other anthro grad students get at "peer" institutions.
so i wanna finish.
but fuck a job market.

people should be able to go to grad school if thats what they love

but there is no good reason whatsoever to do that right out of college without working at least 2-3 years

Even though I was reading this thread throughout the day and full well know what the title is, I looked at the title and thought you had edited it to "So You Want to be a Humanpanties Phd?" and it made me lol. And then I realized I'm just not in touch with reality.

Or humor, I guess.

i try to expose myself to as many "grad school in the humanities is a death trap" videos/articles/blog posts and yet i've yet to be dissuaded. i'm still applying. to study film no less.

i'm 29 and i work at the apple store, so i'm pretty sure i've exhausted most of my BA-level options.

do these salaries include the basics, ie pensions, holiday pay, matched savings and insurance

The ones I've been referring to include holiday and sick leave, but matched savings and insurance are separate. There are no pensions here unless you've been around since the early 90s or earlier. The benefits load actually tacks on another 25 to 30% in expenses to the university that aren't included in the salary number.

Cost of living is pretty high here and it's a top research school, but I've always thought the salaries for faculty and executives were insane for a public institution.

There's definitely some unethical shit anyway. For older profs who were hired at a time when true pensions were available, it's a fairly common practice for them to retire as soon as the pension is available and get hired back as a professor emeritus for an additional six figures on top of the full pension. We have some profs making 300k+ a year this way.

fuck man back in the 60s if you were a nerdy white dude you could get a phd and a job no problem and be sitting on 300k a year today. and you wouldn't even have to learn hard math.

University of washington

There was a big shitstorm in the school and local papers last year about the salary double dipping thing. Pretty sure it's still going on though since its technically above board.
