Are you thinking full ribs where the panhandle comes over onto your stomach/back or something smaller?

edit @ JohnK obviously

Full ribs. I figure the panhandle will start about a couple inches under my left nipple and wrap from there.

Yeah, I like this. What's up with owls? I know a lot of folks that have them. I think they're really cool, but I didn't know if there was some "deeper" meaning. I hope not.

I want more tattoos. My gf is getting Steve Byrne to work on her next week when we're in Austin for sxsw. I dont think I'll be getting any more ink until late September. Going to New Jersey for ATP and I'll definitely be going to NYC to get some Smith Street tattoos. Sorry nautical hyperblast for aping your shit but I'm really digging Robert Ryan's work and am considering getting some of his work. Gonna be hitting up Pittsburgh on that same trip. Any recs for good artists i should check out in that general area?

I've talked w/ Jace Masula a bit more and decided to go ahead w/ him. I think his work is great, and he seems like a nice enough guy. Anyway, I'm not getting a full half-sleeve after all, just a large piece on my arm that doesn't include shoulder or inner-arm. The option will be available to get more done later, of course. Heading in next month. V stoked.

hey nautical, where do you come up with the ideas for your pieces? i mean, at what point does your idea start/end and the artist just picks it up?

i just base it on the artist and things they've done that i dig for the most part. for steve byrne i just said "something coming out of a goblet" because i know his shit is super clean and symmetrical and saw him do a vase that looked cool.
robert ryan does cool birds, so i had him do a bird with some sacred geometry because i know he's into that occult stuff. the other ideas either just come from classic flash drawings or things i've seen done but think can be done better or tweaked.
i like to give the artist a lot of liberty, so i'm reallllllly particular about who tattoos me. if i see one thing i don't like in their portfolio i write them off because i'm more into giving the artist a lot of liberty so they enjoy what they're doing. ends up with both people being more happy with the end result.

im thinking of getting a tattoo, but im wondering have you guys ever just presented an artist with a concept or specific image and then asked them to follow through exactly to what you had in mind? how do these dudes with classical styles deal with that?

it seems like the "ideal" situation is for artist/customer to reach some middle ground, where the concept comes from the customer and then the aesthetic and so forth is in the artist's hands. but maybe that's bullshit and less common than i think, i don't know.

somebody explain how this shit works

I've been trying to think for a while of what I could get some words covered up on my leg with that wouldn't look stupid if they were surrounding a hotdog in laurels. Life is complicated.

i only have one piece, but i gave my artist a huge amount of discretion. i told him that i wanted a "triumphant abacus," on my bicep. he ended up doing a a pretty massive piece that is absolutely better than anything i could have even thought of.

Of course you can give them a specific image and tell them it's exactly what you want. I'm sure some of the big names who have very defined styles might shy away from that, but I'd say the vast majority of tattoo artists do "specific image" tattoos all the time. Find an artist you like and tell them exactly what you want. If they give you lip about it, find another one.

A good artist will tell you if he's not very good at doing what you want done.
