except that leno's rating were killing with the tonight show... its why NBC felt so confident in the move. what they refused to recognize was the fact that successful dramas led into their lead-in... shit that people watched regularly instead of just dropping by for. it provided an avenue for the Tonight Show to advertise guests, based on whatever that nightly lead in was... they lost that by moving the show pre-news, when their was way more competition for attention. dramas and sitcoms are always going to draw more loyal fans than a take it or leave it, night to night talk show.

I definitely think this was a huge mistake and is a big part of the problem with the ratings for both Leno and Conan. Dropping 10:00 dramas, which have been a fairly strong part of NBC's lineup for a long time, was a real bonehead move.
