Leno In Conan Out of Tonight Show?

Jesus christ you have to be kidding me.

Postby hiddenicon » Thu Jan 07, 2010 10:39 pm

...but yeah, there's no way this happening. conan has 4 1/2 years left on his contract... not to mention Leno went through the same thing when he took over for carson. massive ratings slide, followed by gradual growth, NBC will remember, and its the reason they signed a 5 year deal with conan in the first place.

the leno move to primetime was moronic though.

has tmz ever been wrong?
Haiti is in an uproar about the NBC Late Night Wars. People are rioting in the streets to support Conan O'Brien. Come on, NBC!

This.

The one where he goes a minute without masturbating may be my favorite Conan skit ever...

which is killing the affiliates and, in turn, killing conan...

its why the affiliates are calling for heads. the late show has always depended on strong local news lead-ins to survive... pull that shit up by local markets and the ranking of local newscasts has a direct impact on the follow-up program.

i watched conan pretty regularly there for a while. it was funny and certainly an improvement over leno.

leno's ratings at 10 have been pretty bad too. i think people just don't like watching these types of shows anymore.

except that leno's rating were killing with the tonight show... its why NBC felt so confident in the move. what they refused to recognize was the fact that successful dramas led into their lead-in... shit that people watched regularly instead of just dropping by for. it provided an avenue for the Tonight Show to advertise guests, based on whatever that nightly lead in was... they lost that by moving the show pre-news, when their was way more competition for attention. dramas and sitcoms are always going to draw more loyal fans than a take it or leave it, night to night talk show.

people were saying this exact thing before the move, and NBC expected a small ratings loss, but figured it would be much smaller and more than made up for by the lesser costs of producing the show over a weekly ER, for example.

maybe the tonight show's rating are so bad because no one watches NBC when leno is on?

I definitely think this was a huge mistake and is a big part of the problem with the ratings for both Leno and Conan. Dropping 10:00 dramas, which have been a fairly strong part of NBC's lineup for a long time, was a real bonehead move.

I love Conan, but the few times I have watched the new show it's been a bit stale

It might be a good idea for him to move onto some different projects... it would be interesting to see what would come of it

this is part of it, for sure. though dont kid yourself... the people who came of age watching conan in college are getting there soon.

but yeah, there was a reason that Leno excelled in the middle of the country at 10:35... the over 40 set that he most connected with were a captive audience at that timeslot as they went to sleep.

i like conan a lot but i'm not sure if he's a good match for the tonight show
his tv personality has also suffered a lot from him getting married and getting kids and becoming old and rich and a bit obnoxious, when he's supposed to be this slightly faggy but charming insecure nerd guy
also his writers suck for the most part
jon stewart might be good
leno is the worst, that much is clear
seinfeld would suck too
wow all these people are going to hell!

Totally agree and I feel like I fall into that category. I love him whenever I watch, but I find myself watching Colbert and going to sleep.

I actually think he's been pretty fucking funny considering the transition. And maybe if NBC got off his balls for a couple years he'd develop a new, solid fanbase for the Tonight Show. Those Leno fuckers (our parents) are gonna be dying off soon.

What

I feel like Conan hasn't changed terribly much in the last five, six years. Even his Tonight Show act--while a few skits definitely feel like bait for the Leno crowd who might still be around and a coy wink to everyone else, he has a lot more zaniness than I expected

With that said, I watched Late Night all the time and very little of the Tonight Show, preferring Colbert instead
