Jon Stewart on a major network would be a disaster of epic proportions

Personally I love him but I could see how his personality could grate

He really picks and chooses who he asks real questions (especially during election season) and he always seems to be walking the fine line between comedian and just some other pundit.

i don't really love his character but he has enough self-awareness and control to still be funny and watchable
i feel he gives more room for the material while conan overindulges in his own more and more unappealing zaniness
this might be because conan has weaker material and stewart has maybe the best writers
wow all these people are going to hell!

Yeah he definitely strikes me as a bit self-important these days, which he tries to compensate for with self-deprecation

And you're right, part of the reason he's successful is he has amazing writers

does anyone think it's funny that this is basically the same trajectory conan followed when he took over late night? just sayin', it might not be wise to bet against him.

I mean, I don't think he's as suited to 11:30 as he was to 12:30, but it seems like he's been feeling out what he can get away with at 11:30, and now the show's starting to feel more assured. especially now that andy's back on the couch. if nbc gives him a chance, he might reach his audience with time

the colbert report is the most consistently funny late night show on tv. it doesn't have as many memorable moments or things that I'll be rewatching on youtube or wherever way down the road like conan does, but I rarely ever feel like I've watched a boring, flat episode like what happens with conan every so often

Leno should have a car show.
It will take Conan all of 5 years to gain any audience.
It's criminal that Colbert is not on a network show.

Seems like the switch back would be a disaster, but that doesn't mean they won't do it. NBC has been making some pretty lame decisions.

I love Conan but his Tonight Show (and really, the last few years of Late Night) has felt so stale, I can barely watch it anymore. It's like a robot writes it, just churning out terrible Kirstie Allie and Paris Hilton jokes. The only time there's been a spark in years was when the writers were on strike...Conan just fucking around was way better than half-assed monologues and overused bits.

Yeah definitely... the thing where he was playing Guitar Hero with his writers was funnier than pretty much anything scripted he's done recently

He hasn't been doing enough shit like going to play old-timey baseball with the historical reenactment people... that stuff was gold

NBC's comments on the matter are hilarious:
"As we have said all along, Jay’s show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates."

how long does it take shareholders to storm the fucking castle...

that's like all he tried to do in the first week or two when i was watching. every other segment was an "out and about in la" segment and they were all lame and forced because you can't just go out and do another old-timey baseball thing.

i haven't been watching regularly since but it seems like whenever i turn it on they're doing some gimmicky out-of-studio thing even if it's just a stunt in a parking lot, instead of just goofy funny jokes.

also stewart (in particular) and colbert are perfect where they are and would be horrific on a network late night show, i hope that's not a serious consideration

I can't wait to hear Leno comment on that dead playboy model during his monologue tonite.

Hosts I would watch:

Quentin Tarantino[1]
James Franco
A furious and unwilling Michael Haneke
Bill Clinton

[1] Gives me the serious creeps but seems like he'd do a good interview[2] and some really bizarre sketches
[2] Unless the guest is a woman, in which case, serious creeps

When did they put Andy back on the couch? That's what they should've done from the start. The whole strength of early Late Night wasn't that it was solo Conan O'Brien, it was Conan and Andy co-starring/working in tandem that made for some of the best comedy.

There's clearly a problem with Conan's show these days, whether it just be the passing of time, being older and married with children (no more moments like flirting with Rebecca Romijn)... or being less adventurous in the new time slot... or his writers... but we all know Conan is still hilarious when he wants to be. During the writer's strike, or the blackout, or when he goes off the script - that's when he really shines. I really wish they would toss the recycled Paris Hilton jokes, throw out half the script and wing it where they can. Conan has a great personality whereas Leno without writing behind him is like the Hindenburg.
I've seen plays that were more exciting than this! Honest to god, PLAYS!
