While I do understand that they are connecting as human women from different completely different cultures, my knee-jerk reaction lead me to interpret this as some form of criticism on beauty standards held by people in a non-Western culture. The Namibian women seem fascinated by the perkiness of Gusov’s wife’s breasts and compare them to their own in an innocuous way, however to me it reads, “Hey I’m white, look at my socially coveted, perky tits!” I suppose with all the literature I’ve been reading about the savage sexualization of women of African descent by the West during the 19th and 20th century I immediately had an inflammatory response. The very first photo in the series softens some of the racial overtones, allowing the viewer to share the moment of pure human unity between these two women. Bottom line: I like it but I still feel weird about it.
