I'm just surprised that instead of getting bored and flipping out, many otherwise promising and intelligent nextgen litbros seem hellbent on turning any practical knowledge or capacity for measured thought towards an endgame of watching TV professionally.

Some of the guys on the sportswriter's board that my brother posts on are furious about this.

it is, but its weird because the style he writes with/the site is intended for is nowhere near the way grantland rice wrote

Using Grantland as the name was an ESPN exec's idea

it was a copy/past, so just another thing they fucked up.
I can just imagine Simmons right now furiously refreshing his page views counter every 30 seconds.

Indeed.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/05/magazine/can-bill-simmons-win-the-big-one.htmlUltimately, though, it’s owned by ESPN, and the parent company has already made its presence known, choosing the site’s name, which Simmons is less than enthusiastic about. He worries that it sounds pretentious, he told me, but the higher-ups at ESPN “loved it, and they’ve been so supportive of the site. You’ve got to pick your battles.”

yeah, seriously. dude has the most pedestrian perspective on the game imaginable. that filtered through his dumb, constant pop-culture references and masshole obstinance is just unbearable.
Besides maybe Hollinger and Shoals who writes better about the nba? You both just hate Boston homerism which is fine. It's just petty though to dismiss all of his nba writing because the guy is sort of a piece of shit.

A ton of people write better than Bill Simmons on the NBA. Unless you literally mean people on ESPN.

I know FreeDarko and it's a fair answer, but there are a millions of NBA blogs and columnist out there before you have to be picking from the top writers on espn.com

Dwyer's gotten a lot worse recently and Woj is borderline unreadable when it comes to anything other than news he's breaking
So basically, yeah, most sportswriting is awful

Oh please Leitch apologists to the back. Deadspin is a fucking Denton vehicle, it's sports gossip, always has been.

Klosterman came to my college for a full fucking week. He gave one big lecture and spent the rest of the week visiting classes and doing short q&a's with students.
I don't care about the dude one way or another, but I was a journalism major and he showed up in four of my classes as well as visiting our student newspaper which I worked for. His schtick was well-honed the first two times I saw him and they way other students were reacting to it was kinda irritating.
By the end of the week he came to my criticism class and seemed completely hollow. I think four days of having to be Chuck Klosterman had succeeded in making him completely fucking sick of himself. He seemed embarrassed to have to trot out the same prepared material for the umpteenth time in front of the people he was starting to recognize.
Strangely enough, that demonstrable personality fatigue made me kinda like him. I read his new book after that. Although it was pretty bland, I liked the sports stuff all right. It seemed like the only stuff he honestly cared about.
