You either die on Page 2 or you live long enough to see yourself turn into Rick Reilly

I can't figure out why he doesn't get credit for obviously valuing the young, diverse, and talented staffs he's had at grantland and the ringer . so deadspin is blaming him for being rich and using that money to publish an inclusive website/podcasting network showcasing an interesting array of perspectives on culture/sports/politics/whatever? Okay. Is it weird, then, that respected writers like Wesley Morris, Zach Lowe, Rembert Browne seem to love the guy? I don't understand how he's not a net good.

As to why good writers seem to love the guy, Simmons is, by all accounts, a really good boss. Which is fine! I think the first paragraph I quoted is a fair criticism of the man. (The second less so, since, regardless of how much he was paid, ESPN did dick him in the end.)

They're not blaming him for being rich. They're explaining why he's not just a typical sportswriter and thus deserves more coverage/criticism.

simmons should probably just stop writing articles entirely at this point, he's just a parody of himself

the ringer has some good writers but it's never really worked for me like grantland did

It's weird - I really don't disagree with anything Deadspin said or any of their criticism. And yet, I definitely still listen to his pods 2-3 times a week and subscribe to multiple other Ringer podcasts.

I mean, I avoid anything he writes or speaks of regarding the Patriots, best I can. But as dumb as they are, I tend to enjoy his bad Celtics takes (perhaps it takes one to know one?)

I've read simmons book of basketball probably ten or more times, it's in my top 3 favorite all-time books among thousands. he and I are the same age, and I grew up in oregon with a basketball fanatic father who grew up in boston and had season tickets throughout the 60s, so clearly the russell history was there and so I grew up loving the celts. in the 80s! what a great time to be a celtics fan. plus I lived in oregon so being a celtics fan was awesome because they were great and it made me sorta unique among blazer fans. his book is an all-time classic IF you like his style of ten-page sidebars and 7 footnotes per page. I agree that he's a weirdo homer and a megalomaniac but I will love and re-read that book until I die

Bill really loves to make jokes to people about them leaving The Ringer. I don't think he can physically talk to his co-workers without doing one.

We have a family gift exchange and I have gotten The Book of Basketball three times. Once by request when I was in my early 20s and then twice more from other family members when I asked for a book and they needed to add something extra to make the 20 dollar limit. They know I love basketball so it must be the first thing that comes up when you type basketball book. Every time I got the book my brother has called Bill "that little guy". The End.
