T2i or T3i bundles are probably the best deal you can get on an entry level dslr.

qwerty wrote:hey so i'm really interested in getting a DSLR camera, but really don't know what to get, what to look for, best brands, etc. i've always just had the point/shoot digital cameras but want something much more. i'm not looking to do professional shoots but want something that's better quality than the point/shoot. would be used to photograph my kid, nature, things like that. i dont really care about video but it looks like the lower models include it. I guess i'd be looking between the $500-$1k range (thats pretty much the entry level range, right?). like would something like this be solid? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Canon+-+EOS ... Id=9778635

i wish this was something i bought a long time ago

buy a used body for like $400-500 and spend the balance on a decent zoom and a fast prime

shit, you can buy a used t1i body for $360, a used EF-s 18-135mm zoom for $250

add any 28/30/35/50mm with f/2 or faster, bring it up to just under 1k and you're set for a while

all used on amazon, so you can return that shit for 30 days no sweat, which is all you really need to see if there are any issues

im not a nikon guy so someone tell me if that's a bad deal as far as their wacky AF situation is concerned or something

you could go canon refurbished (see below)

reburb t3i body: $540
used ef-s 18-135 for $225

and a fast prime like a 35mm f/2 or 50mm f/1.8 or something

and you're good for under a G

just try them out and see. there's variations in the image quality, build quality, interface, video functionality, low-light handling, features etc.

Major differences:
  • Nikon is generally acknowledged to have more accurate/faster AF systems, especially in their top-tier/full-frame bodies
  • Canon's lens selection is somewhat larger and the lenses are often cheaper; optical quality is a matter of much debate with no clear aggregate winner (there are a few clear wins in specific focal lengths/apertures, though)
  • Ergonomics are a matter of taste (personally I can't stand Canon's control scheme)
  • Build quality at the top end is a tossup, on the low end I generally feel Nikon's a little better (along with Pentax)

If you're into manual lenses, you can adapt Nikon to Canon but you can't adapt Canon to Nikon (for the moment at least, it would probably work on future mirrorless Nikon cameras). This is a bigger deal if you're planning on shooting video and just want a set of fast manual primes, in which use case you should vastly be preferring Canon over Nikon anyway.

I was the opposite on ergonomics and menu system. liked canon more... liked the more bulky body (at the time... not sure how new models compare). but I agree you should just go hold some and go with what feels right to you. you want something you're gonna use, not that you're gonna leave at home... that does no good no matter how fancy the gear is

don't over think it... every week ou spend contemplating canon v nikon is a week you're not taking photos

Nice shots, tb. I took some aquarium pics yesterday that I'll post soon, shit was a Bitch to shoot. Reflections off the glass, smudges and scratches on the glass, glass refractions, low lighting, focus, and framing all presented huge problems for me. Yours turned out really nicely though.
