I've been trudging my way through this thread for the last 2 days. So far, I'm up to page 59. Often I'm totally lost when people say things like "I used my Q50mm 1.43 l/t." but I'm trying to pick things up. I signed up for an 8 week photography class at the local arts center next month that will hopefully teach me basic composition and lighting.

Anyone know where I could get Lightroom for Windows?

also, instead of trying to figure this shit out from this thread get a book like understanding exposure. you an probably get it used on amazon for $5

theres not really that much to learn in terms of buzzwords:
10mm = wide-angle lens, 50mm = standard lens, 200mm = telephoto (i.e. zoomed) lens. Zoom lens will often be described like 18-55mm, so they go from wide to medium. Lens with fixed widths are called Prime lens.

f1.4, f2, f4 etc. This is the maximum aperture of the lens. (Almost) every lens can change this aperture value, but having a wide aperture (i.e. a low f-stop number like f1.8 or lower) is preferable for low-light situations. One side-not for changing your Aperture is the wider you go, the narrower your depth of focus is - i.e. if you set your camera to f22 pretty much everything should look in focus, whilst if you set it to F1.4 you have to be VERY precise with what your focusing on.

the other terms are just technology descriptors like Image Stabilization, Vibration Reduction, Full Frame etc...

You can download Lightroom 4 directly from the Adobe website for free, plus there are heaps of torrents around which will allow you to crack it...

Thanks for the tips. The lens measurements are really helpful. I've got so much in front of me to learn. Like, even if I manage to take a good shot, then I'm going to have to tackle post-processing it.

just learn to use your camera first. manual mode, no cropping afterwards :)

this is why i think its helpful to learn on a film camera first. like, get a $50 no frills used Nikon FM/FG or whatever and a 1.4 50mm prime. thats it. just go out and see what you can do. its really easy to get bogged down with modern DSLRs and endless menus and settings. going no frills teaches you to really learn what your camera is doing. it also forces you to be selective in the shots you take...so many people now just take 1,000 digital shots in the hopes that a few are decent but that won't teach you consistency or how to be selective. using a 50mm also forces you to get close to your subjects, and dosent let you fall back on zooming in on shit from a mile away...plus its a great cheap lens anyway.

really try not to worry too much about Lightroom/Photoshop right away. Just focus on composition/lighting/subject, and trying to get it as good as you can in-camera.

Came in here to post something similar and this is excellent advice. I think learning digital can be a great tool, it certainly helped me in certain ways, but it can be overwhelming. I think editing 27 pictures at a time is going to be more advantageous than trying to edit several hundred. If you get overwhelmed Chachi just think about this: All this is is light traveling through some glass and hitting a piece of film (or a sensor or emulsion or whatever) for a certain amount of time. This has been constant since the birth of the medium.

It really depends on the person, but I think there's a lot of value in learning on digital rather than film. Instant feedback, and you can still do everything manually. I would say just limit yourself - one prime lens (35mm f/2 or 50mm f/1.4 is a good choice), manual everything (you set the shutter, ISO, white balance and aperture), and perhaps only give yourself a roll of film's worth of shots when you go out. You could also just shoot JPEG rather than RAW until you get further along, that will keep you from feeling like you have to process them yourself.

Once you've been doing it for a little while and you're getting familiar with how the major variables interact (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length) find some images you like on Flickr and check out the EXIF info. Then you can see a little bit about how the image was made technically, that can be pretty useful. After that it's just all about composition and light.

I'd like to learn by manually setting everything, but right now I've just got a Nikon Coolpix L110. It doesn't allow manual aperture or shutter speed, just ISO. I hate it, but I also know part of why I hate it is because I'm not any good at using it yet. Hopefully, the 8 week photography class I'm about to take will help with that.

Even though I've got tons of memory card space, I really don't like to take a bunch of photos at a time. I try to be really selective about what I am attempting to shoot. If I'm out for the day hiking or something, I might only take 10-20 photos. I realize that's probably not the best thing for learning and improving and I need to force myself to take more to try different settings, angles, light, etc.

I'm up to page 89 now. It's weird reading through almost 3 years of progression over several days. Especially in a thread where it's primarily just a handful of people who post. I've seen windfucker slowly unravel and would ask "Where do I know you from?" to DWB's friend if she passed by on the street.

So I read that the announcement of the next Canon EOS is expected in June. Once it comes out, how much do you think that will affect the price of the T3i?

Weird, I just found again the battered Canon AE-1 that's always been hanging around the house. I'm now wondering if it's worth getting fixed up. It's been a toy in the house for as long as I can remember but I don't think it needs much work.. Though finding someone who still repairs these here might be a problem.

Probably just as cheap to find another one. Those bodies can be had for like $20-$30.
