Photography Thread Mk. New Board

Jesus christ you have to be kidding me.

excellent, thanks. I'm working in an academic environment at the moment, working with a lot of faculty and staff of labs and the such, and starting to think of ways to learn a bit more and decrease the monotony of the same environment over and over.

ironically, the only piece of gear I've ever had stolen is my 580exII, which I swiftly replaced.

I think so, you just have to get a m39 or m42 mount to Nikon mount adapter. I don't think the d40 meters through manual lenses so you'll have to set it to manual mode and work out the proper exposure by changing all the variables yourself. I shot a bunch that way with my d50 and it was a nice way to get good at eyeballing exposures. Could be frustrating in fast-moving/changing environments though.

Thanks. The coastal shots are along Highway 1, the forest pics are mostly Point Reyes, and the cemetery is at Fort Ross.

I love shooting fog so much and got blessed on this trip.

Decided to try out the Helios 44 on a shoot. Kinda fun...but really only interesting if you're going wide-open with it.

Is Lightroom the main program for sorting &editing RAW files? Just shot using RAW for the first time today and Gimp isn't the best for this.

Lightroom's my favorite by far. There's also Aperture and Camera RAW inside Photoshop and some others.

Has anyone ever had the pleasure of shooting someone with completely busted teeth? Had one today and I wanted to stage an intervention/makeover.

Some thoughts on photographing people:

I have always been a huge people watcher. I'm the kinda person that when someone steps into the train car with me, I wonder what their story is. Taking the assumptions and running wild with it. Making up entire life paths and scenarios.

People ask, "if you could have any super power, what would it be"? Well, invisibility was always at the top of my list and it occurred to me recently that having the camera up is an invisibility cloak of sorts. Not so much in a street situation but def in a hired situation.

It really hits home when I shoot weddings. I get invited into homes, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc. to capture the most important day in someone's life. They are too busy to worry about me. Shit just unfolds as if I don't exist and I can be the fly on the wall that I've always wanted to be. It's such a weird feeling when I get out of work mode and look around...."whoa...where the fuck am I? Who are these people?" It can be disorientating at times and others times exhilarating.

Some recently "getting ready" shots:

No, I mean it looks a lot better if you're viewing it on a black background.

honestly, if you want landscape type stuff i think i'd go up to the white mountains in october or something. but there's a lot of scenic stuff, just not really dramatic... except for the fall color when it comes around. that can vary a lot... like there can be no color down here and it can be in full force up north, or it can be colorful down here and bare trees up north

you gonna be out here for a while?
