Mirror Mirror is probably the TOS ep with the biggest influence on later Trek, weirdly enough

I couldn't get halfway through episode 4 because I can't watch a star trek where everyone in the crew is just being huge assholes to each other

does anyone lighten up in later episodes? the hufflepuff roommate does NOT count

and do they lay off the forumla of "everyone sucks and is stupid and a wide-eyed hushed-realization Burnham is the only one who can save them all" at any point?

They really do get better bad craziness.

One of the mean characters dies, another one becomes a fan favorite. The only one who is really a dick now is Lorca and he’s still likeable.

yeah, the showrunners also said last week that they recognized the balance wasnt quite right yet and they planned to adjust to being more Trekky:

“The other thing that’s a huge theme for us is taking the Federation from the darkness into the light. Everybody wants this optimistic version of Star Trek right out of the gate. And I feel that our show has a lot of hope in it from episode to episode, depending on storyline we’re tracking...by season’s end, people will see the Federation they’ve come to know and love from TOS on.”

Next Gen was my first true geek love when I was 10 or 11... became obsessed around the start of Season 3. Bought the fan magazines, went to a convention or two, carried the tech manual in my backpack in middle school, the whole thing. I'm old enough to remember the hate from the fan base it's first 2 seasons and then how slowly a big chunk came around by season 4. If any show deserves some patience out of the gate, it's this one.

There's enough working right on Discovery right now for me stick with it... I'm enjoying about half of it. Love Stammets, Tilly, and Saru. The other regulars are getting more interesting. And in that same interview from the previous post, the producers said that while they werent jettisoning the serialized nature of Discovery, they would be putting more focus on morality plays in season 2. I dont know... pieces are there, it's getting time to self-correct, it had a rough behind-the-scenes launch, producers seem to be saying the right things. I remain hopeful it turns into something above merely passable.

Saru is the weak link among the regular characters for me. The antagonism they hinted at between him and Lorca and him and Burnham never materialized, they haven't been consistent with his threat ganglia, and they made one attempt to do something interesting with his character and completely bungled the payoff.

oh, yeah. he definitely needs to be written better. but i like the performance and the conflict between his basic decency and his leery survival instincts are great foundation for future examinations. the show needs to examine it a bit more carefully instead of just using the ganglia for flavor or to advance plot points. that's where i'm hoping the commitment to character based morality plays thats been promised isnt just lip service, because his and Tilly's characters seem the most ripe for that (and maybe Lorca, but he's still too mysterious motive wise to know where he's coming from... i Imagine they'll go late series Sisko with him.) Burnham... I just dont know. She's both overwritten and underwritten, and i think it's causing Martin to give a muddled performance. she seems capable and has had some good moments when the writing is up to snuff, but so far they've only written her as "penitent".

Oh boy that last episode had the most cringeworthy god awful dialogue yet. Everything between Burnham and Tyler, everything during the visit with the rebels, Tilly explaining how to heal stammets, furthermore, whenever Klingon is spoken on the show it’s ... not good. At all.

they really thought the tyler/voq thing was going to be a big shocking reveal huh

lorca being from the MU is looking more likely as well

so they will completely telegraph it and then treat it like a big shocking reveal

i really enjoy this show though

You must not have been reading this thread Chargie. Someone in here guessed it and tipped me off. I’m curious where they’re going to go from here with this show.

I'm gonna be very annoyed if Lorca is only a season 1 character. There's so much unexplored potential in the idea of a Trek captain who is actually a bad dude. I hope that Lorca and Michael find a way to cover it up so it becomes more an ongoing Don Draper secret for himToggle Spoiler
