something about the meta dialogue and pacing is uncomfortable, the gore, this show is strange

Michael's general and constant brooding (occasionally punctuated by action sequences) renders her, to me, about the most one-note character in the otherwise-great ensemble. I'm hoping they manage to lighten that up in a way other than like, quippy back and forth sibling rivalry type jokes.

I feel like liking any of the other series is totally irrelevant to whether or not you'll like this.

the third episode makes me feel like this can't last more than one season.

I dug episode 3 and there's a lot of cool stuff going on

I just hope there's room amongst all the war and interpersonal conflict for all the things I love about ST

exploration, idealism, optimism, competency porn

if it's going to be whole seasons of "the Federation is kind of bad in some ways", "here's how this affects the war" and "shut up, traitor -> I begrudgingly respect you, traitor" I'm probably going to bail

i don think this show is gonna be like any old trek.

like the engineer and the captain hate each other. when saru called michael the smartest starfleet officer the capatain was like, and she knows you too!

and we know that biological warp technology or whatevery they're tying to do is gonna fail.

getting Don Draper vibes from Captain Lorca

I kind of like the idea of Don Draper as a Starfleet captain

but I also feel like Star Trek protagonists really need to be role models in some way and if everyone is going to be Complex and Dark on this show it's really disappointing

new Batman and Superman are assholes, new Star Trek captain is an asshole

what contemporary pop-protagonists would we feel good about children wanting to emulate? Captain America? Spider-Man? is that it?

i don't like lorca so far but he is the only one in starfleet who actually looked at the context of burnhams actions so at least he isn't a total bonehead.

what is up with those gills that came out of saru's head while he was eating dinner?

Finally watching the pilot, and Doug Jones seems so much more comfortable with this material than everyone else.

Saru waving his hands around and trying to explain the beacon while no one's paying attention to him is the only dialogue that hasn't seemed silly and stilted.

I'm digging it all, though.

I thought I didn't miss star trek until I saw this. I know it's not really star trek but I'm glad to revisit this universe again. I wonder if Lorca will last beyond one season. I can't imagine an amoral captain being sustainable.

though could have used 5 seconds of dialogue like

burnham: and what was that creature that can mutilate klingons and tear through double re enforced walls?
lorca: maybe klingons bring their pets on away missions

Releasing one of those things should be standard procedure when your ship has been boarded

This turned into Hidden Figures for a second when she started out in the number crunching room. Sci fi forum nerds are loving the band camp girl.

just had a thought that maybe they're running with a Dark and Complex Early Federation at War to show over the course of the series how the later Federation of moral principles and dignity emerged

like maybe they flip the script and we'll have a ship full of flawed assholes learning a lesson from an alien civilization instead of a series of flawed alien civs learning lessons from a ship full of moral paragons

maybe I'm grasping at straws here and I need to accept that Star Trek is now going to be Just Another Gritty Modern Grump-Fest

Yeah, I don't think this is limited to just the board. There wasn't a single peep about this possibly being better than expected.
