I have a feeling they're doing an arc where everyone starts out antagonistic and learns to get along a bit better, but yeah, it's still all wrong.

What they did to the Klingons is especially terrible. It's just "cut away to see the bad guys" garbage.

Mean engineer guy is growing to like Burnham. I don't think they're all jerks at heart. It's Lorca's effect on the crew. For now we just have to draw our positivity from the critter and band camp girl.

I like Lorca as a potentially unreliable captain rather than the noble peacemaker

We see glimpses of this TNG with Pressman and O'Brien's captain who went rogue but it's never been explored from this angle

on the one hand name dropping elon musk was ridiculous, but on the other hand it's a space faring civilization and he's the first guy to make privatizing aspects of it practical so it's possible he could do some great whateverthing.

why would elon musk exist in an earth timeline where the 1990s were a decade of genocidal wars between genetic supermen?

unless it's a third, as yet unannounced timeline, both mainline trek and abrams trek both have the eugenics wars as an important earth milestone event (that's why khan is the main villain in Into Darkness)

Lorca’s voice has a Don Draper cadence

I'm enjoying this so far but it's bothering me that apparently the imaginary computer voice from 2250 sounds way way worse than a real computer voice in 2017

Yeah I don't like the computer voice either. And the fact that Burnham was able to outargue the computer into letting her out of the brig was weird

Whenever there is a long, drawn-out Klingon scene, I can't help but look at my phone. The Klingon sections of this show are among the worst thing ever filmed for a Television series. So bad.

thought ep 5 was really solid. doug jones is incredible.

tilly dropping "fuck" and then stamets saying it right after was hilarious.

solidly self-contained ep.

rainn wilson was pretty good! thought they set mudd up well for a return.

you could honestly skip all the klingon stuff, it's not overlapping at all with the main story other than to just know the klingons are at war with the federation

i also got some pretty racist vibes from the portrayal of the klingons

like the largely white rationalist federation is being threatened by these dark-skinned primitivist dudes who carry torches and speak this guttural language and care a lot about honouring ancestors. i know this is an old criticism

eh you might have turned it off before they made (what i thought was) the point of that whole thing, and pretty directly calling out the colonialist bullshit of the federation, by having t'kuvma be infuriated with the complete lie that is "we come in peace".

I found both to be true. It sort of seemed to call out the colonialist nature of the federation, but the portrayal of the klingons still seems racist to me.

t'kuvma in particular looking like a caricature of how I imagine white people see africans. also, it was funny that the one "white" klingon ended up with the important task of lighting the beacon or whatever. t'kuvma all like "all other klingons are racist but I trust even you, one white klingon!"Toggle Spoiler It was pretty funny tbf

they're leaning pretty hard on the "quote something profound to yourself" trope in this so far.

the characterisation seems videogame level bad. we need a mad one, we need a mysterious one, we need a goofy one. zzz
