cool! I just remembered the extent to which it seemed all the board guys I looked up to as having good taste turned on them with that album and then Pitchfork gave it some insanely high score it didn't really seem to deserve at the time, seemingly to make up for blowing it with Alligator

and the name of that man was Amen Dunes

why didn't pitchfork review the new Twin Shadow album that came out two months ago? they covered the release of the album, its singles etc. but never published an album review. seems really weird? unless it was going to be another flop review like the last album and they worked something out so they'd just ignore it instead of giving it a shit review? seems strange!

the scores are a way to have your cake and eat it too so even with a middling or outright bad editorial the Big Artist or Good PR Agency Backed Artist can still feel adequately compensated and point to their 7+ on p4k

yea a theorization of the dynamic between the copy and the scores would be interesting

while I get what you're saying, it's probably a bigger and better thing that editorial and sales have at least the appearance of a firewall in this respect

I honestly think it's a lot more boring than people would think. the scores come from a consensus of the staff (or at least some of the review team) and the copy is just a writer and editor. there's bound to be a bit of digression time to time. imagining this nefarious PR back channel of glad handing for softer scores or copy is silly.

those "explore [artist]'s [album] in 5 minutes" videos are such a fucking bleak concept. Like, if you don't want to just take the time to listen to an album, then guess what, you don't get to "explore" it, because the only way to meaningfully "explore" it is to fucking listen to it. It's like they're prioritizing the memorization of facts about an album over enjoyment of the actual music.
